Song Suggestion -- Please help!

sofakng wrote on 12/11/2003, 6:16 PM
I'm doing a slideshow for my grandparents for christmas. I've made two before this but they were for my girlfriend so picking out the music was **much** easier.

Anyways, my grandparents were born around 1920, so I'm looking for songs from the 1930s or 1940s era.

The theme I want is "time" ... showing my grandparents children (my father, my aunts), etc, etc.

So, can anybody suggest any songs for me?

Any help is GREATLY appriciated =)

(of course I'm using Vegas for this or else I wouldn't be posting here, just fyi) =)

Try a web search...

Example songs +1930 or 1940. If born in 1920, you probably want songs 15-20 years later. That period around WWII lots of bands, jazz, if they that like that. Also Lawrence Welk music is probably something they would like, Mitch Miller (sing a long) stuff like that.

In the "Big Bands" era (~WWII) you can still find albums (on CD) of: Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton(Jazz), Benny Goodman, Ozzie Nelson.... A lot of these are offered by "Reader's Digest". While I can't think of any with a specific time theme, the CD's sound like old recordings. Most of these were dance bands, but dance at night clubs was very popular when your parents were young.

There are some pretty good songs from that era: "Love Letters in the Sand", "My Funny Valentine", "All of Me", "Pennies from Heaven".

Oh, well, good luck and have fun putting it together.

How about "Time After Time" Music by Jule Styne, Lyrics by Sammy Cahn 1947

What good are words I say to you?
They can't convey to you what's in my heart
If you could hear instead
The things I've left unsaid

Time after time
I tell myself that I'm
So lucky to be loving you

So lucky to be
The one you run to see
In the evening, when the day is through

I only know what I know
The passing years will show
You've kept my love so young, so new

And time after time
You'll hear me say that I'm
So lucky to be loving you

I only know what I know
The passing years will show
You've kept my love so young, so new

And time after time
You'll hear me say that I'm
So lucky to be loving you
Lucky to be loving you

Bryan Ferry has a CD titled "As Time Goes By" that also has that track on it. Excellent rendition for your purposes. Also, the soundtrack from Gosford Park (the movie) has some lovely pieces by Jeremy and Christopher Northam. Of course, it's illegal to use this stuff without buying the rights. Not uncommon when doing personal stuff, though, is it?

Oscar winning film (I don't know how it was translated into English) but, albeit not old (unless 3 or 4 years can be considered old) it has a wonderful song in it...

"smile...
as if you were a child..."
I forget the rest.....
Good for slideshows....

"Time it was and what a time it was it was,
A time of innocence a time of confidences.

Long ago it must be, I have a photograph
Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you"

That is such a beautiful song. I can hear it in my mind even after so many years. So simple. So profound. The way music used to be.
