What is it with Sony and their press releases latley? How many more are they going to let "slip" out?

Jsnkc wrote on 3/17/2004, 1:50 PM

This may be a dunderhead question, but here goes:
I recently purchased a Sony deck, the DSR-45. Will this play back the HDV format? or is it, for some reason, locked into the standard DV format?
Thanks in advance for not makig fun of my obvious ignorance.

That is one sexy lookin' camera.

I wonder if it does 24P. I don't see any indication on the body. Looks to have manual zoom though. Nice.

2.9 MB Hi rez picy

Good bet that we will get a look at this guy at NAB. Sure hope so.

DROOOOOLLLLL!!!!

Some thoughts on that hi-rez pic:

1. I don't see any XLR inputs. (unless it's on that flat panel above the microphone) Do you think this is the VX version, and there's a PD version on the way?

2. Did you notice the zoom ring and switch? Looks like it's switchable from manual to servo. With markings, yet!

3. What do you suppose the "1" "2" and "3" buttons on the side of the lens barrel do?

4. I don't see an LCD screen..... unless it's integrated with the tape door in some way.

Oh, man, NAB is going to be something else...

John_Cline:
Have you messed around with the Cineform HDV codec yet?
If your interested I can give you a brief synopsis of what I have found.

1. I don't see any XLR inputs. (unless it's on that flat panel above the microphone)

I see volume and manual controls at the back so maybe the XLR inputs are on the back panel, or other side.

2. Did you notice the zoom ring and switch? Looks like it's switchable from manual to servo. With markings, yet!

Yes!

3. What do you suppose the "1" "2" and "3" buttons on the side of the lens barrel do?

Super functions, like the buttons on Speed Racer's Mach 5 steering wheel!

4. I don't see an LCD screen..... unless it's integrated with the tape door in some way.

Hadn't noticed that, but I was wondering what the flip out panel over the mic is. Maybe that's the LCD. Looks like it might pivot after it flips out.

I love counter-intelligence photo interpretation.

THe Url above came up with an error - but this seems to be the right one:
http://www.sony-europe.com/PageView.do?site=odw_en_EU&page=PressReleaseDetail&section=en_EU_Press&pressrelease=1079021485605

Not really any real info on the camera though. mostly a press release about the HDV format and the future with some hype about Sony Vaios and future built in HD capability. This is sort of like the first press release for the JVC HDV camera when it came out.

Doesn't mention NAB in the press relase, only that a prototype of the camera will be at CeBit. If you look close at the hi-res image you see the model number is "0000".

Yeah, but MPEG? A small mess to edit in Vegas and usually already too compressed. Tickles me though.

Mmmm nice.

Anyone like to have a guess at the approx price range?
John_Cline wrote on 3/17/2004, 7:18 PM
It will sell for under $5,000

This is just a prototype--you are probably looking at a least a year before it reaches market---I would assume that Vegas (maybe a future version of Vegas) will be able to edit this footage--makes sense for synergy between the camera, the NLE and the computer.
PeterWright wrote on 3/17/2004, 9:10 PM
If that's the likely price, I'll be happy to wait .... I was looking at the PD170 for later this year, but this is something else .....

Carry on using my 8 year old Panny 3CCD dx1 for a bit longer ....
riredale wrote on 3/17/2004, 9:22 PM
The flat thingy on the top is clearly an lcd of some sort. As for the 1-2-3 buttons, I would guess they are configuration setup shortcuts.
PeterWright wrote on 3/18/2004, 1:06 AM
If that is an LCD screen up front - good position - can be seen from either side of the camera.
JJKizak wrote on 3/18/2004, 5:29 AM
Worried about the mpeg2 codec? If you saw the results of the Cineform
codec you would crap your pants, sell the full "HD" stuff and jump on the HDV bandwagon. There is virtually no difference in visual quality
between the Cineform codec and Full "HD" as viewed on my Sony
KV-34HS510 HD set.

Tried all these links throuout the posts and... no image ! I found text but images were edited out...

Is that a "Sony Joke" again?
rique wrote on 3/18/2004, 6:52 AM
And the mysterious Sony press release trend of "here today, gone tomorrow" continues.
FuTz wrote on 3/18/2004, 6:55 AM
Yep.
Concerning camera, that could also mean Sony today, Canon tomorrow in a few cases with that kind of behavior... Especially since we know they make reeeal good cams... ¦ P
