Sony DRU-700A and DVD architect

BINARY wrote on 6/21/2004, 8:53 AM
I recently purchased the new Sony Double Layer DVD burner, but it does not seem compatible with DVD Architect, as it does not show up as an option when I select "prepare and burn DVD"

I have searched Sony';s site for both products and can't seem to find an update to fix this. Has anyone else encountered a similar issue?

Thanks

I too would like input on this. I am looking for a system to handle DVD Architect 1 and was in the process of ordering one with the Sony DRU-700A. If it is incompatible, I need to know now, not after I have laid down the money. I have sent two emails to Sony requesting compatible DVD burners and have yet to get a reply.

DVDA's problems with burning single-layer media on the Sony DRU-700A will be fixed in the next update of DVDA2.

is there any release date for this?

That was very skillfully worded :)

Will the next patch actually support DL create/burn?

We plan to release a DVDA2 bug-fix update within a few weeks. Dual-layer burning support (or any other new features) will not be part of this update.

I simply do not understand "dual layer support.... will not be a part of this update". Sony make the DRU-700A - didn't anyone in hardware talk to anyone in software? The latest edition of Computer Video Editing magazine states: "DVD Architect doesn't even support DVD-9 projects - which will become a serious problem for Sony in the coming months as dual layer recordable DVDs enter the consumer IT market". Wake up Sony!

I am very disappointed about this story. I just bought this DVD writer to be sure to make DVD's I need really fast and starting from DVD architect.

A few months ago I had another question posted to sony without any answer ( about large wavfiles and crashing in vegas ) It was Steinberg that answered me and not Sony !!! Sonicfoundy service wa

sonicfoundry was great, sony seems to have other priorities. Hope it changes very fast.

You make it sound as like they're two departments within one company. Sony Electronics and Sony Pictures Digital are completely different companies. Each with its own resources and its own goals. They may be part of the same, worldwide conglomerate, but there's really no reason to think that one pays much attention to what the other the other is doing.

It's not like they're so bent on world domination like a certain Redmond company that one ensures that its hardware works with the other's software (and no one else's ;). It's for this same reason that Sony Vaio's come with Adobe Premiere instead of Sony Vegas -- because there are other factors at stake than just "keeping it in the family."

Well, that's all well and good, but regardless of the fact that they are two different divisions, the consumer's (like me) view is that if it all has the SONY logo on it, it should, in theory, work together.

To have a Sony product that burns DVDs and another Sony product that authors them, it's not a huge mental leap to assume that the products might work together.

I knew going into this that it was a mistake. I've boycotted anything with the word Sony on it since they got me booted off the internet for sharing a Korn album. I bought this drive because it's the first one out, and now I have no media, and no compatibility with DVD Architect. I should have waited. This drive sucks.

DVD Architect, on the other hand, is awesome.

Not true - there will be memos circulating and technology briefing seminars which are cross-department. Can you imagine Sony (development) coming up with some new portable memory storage system termed "insect stick" which was incompatible with anything else and over-priced, not informing Sony (Software), Sony (Digital Cameras), Sony MP3 Player designers. Does that sound stupid? It may - but it is a living reality in Sony - so bloated the left hand can't even see the right.

Perhaps someone from Sony could condescend to inform us when exactly they have slated DVDA2 to cope with a technology that is already two months old.

Can DVDA at least prepare the files and then you can use some other burning software to put them on the Sony DRU-700A or any other dual layer drive?

I have a 700a and it burns "+" and "-" with the upgrade. Before the upgrade, it would burn only "+". Dual layer support is not included in the upgrade.
