Sony DRU-710

Is anyone here using this DVD burner? For some reason on this model I cannot burn less than the maximum burn speed. I had the DRU-530 and have a Pioneer A106 that I could burn all my -disc at 1x, but with the same media on the DRU-710, I can only burn the maximum speed?? The little box where you choose to change the burning speed isn't even accessible.

Reason it's a concern for me is that I prefer to burn my video DVDs at 1x so there is less chance of errors and for better compatibility.

Thanks in advance,

Frank

That's not just this burner. It was the same way with my HP. It might have something to do with the burning software however. What software do you use to burn (nero only lets me do it at the fsatest speed).

I use both Nero and DVDA. They both won't let me adjust the speed. This tells me it's the burner's firmware. My DRU-530, using the same software allowed me to choose.

i'm on my second sony burner, after wearing out the first one.

i never tried to burn at a speed slower than the media was rated for, because it is not relevant to dvd player compatibility.

if you are having problems, it's not because of the burn speed.

I agree, I've only had problems burning at LESS than the max rated speed.
Audio CDs are not quite the same but again I get better error readings at 20x than 4x. Faster spin means more gyroscopic force to stabilise the disk means less jitter.

I still have the dru-530a, of which i recently upgraded to the 2.1c firmware. I can burn at 8x with dvd-r, with nero, and verify it as well. not a single error yet. Nero allows me to choose any speed from 1x to 8x. I dont use dvda, still on dvdlab, then burn from nero. dvdlab pro allows dual layer and sets the layer splits, so i guess the 710 is next to buy? If i had comfort in home made dual layer working on a majority of others home dvd players I would buy it tomorrow.
