SONY DRU530 burns incompatible DVD's

Just thought I should pass on my experiences with the new Sony DRX530UL burner.

You may recall my prior posts about problems with the burner.

I did some more tests of just how compatible (incompatible) DVD-R's burned with this drive with numerous DVD players. In every case the DVD-R's burned with my prior Sony DRU 500 burner played perfectly. The new DVD-R's played in some players but not all.

Having had zero returns from my customers (100's of DVD's) using the prior DVD500 I just had not expected compatability to be such an issue with a new version. Unfortuntaly Sony support claim that as the DVD plays OK in SOME players that prooves the problem must be with the players and not the burner. Right! They never release new firmware to make it work in more players!

I also burned DVD+R's using the new 530 burner and those did work in all the players I tried. Unfortunately I have got 100's of Ritek printable DVD-R's and I am not about to switch to using a different brand of media now.

I really WILL take this back and get a Pioneer.... although I of course have no guarantee that will be any more compatible I do hope that all the prior posts I have seen from you all who have this burner (107) means you are happy with the player compatability.

Just in case anyone is interested in this....

I returned the Sony DRX530UL to CompUSA... and paid their 15% re-stocking fee (ouch). I then purchased the Pioneer DVR S606 (basicaly the DVR-106D).

Their customer service rep was puzzled as to why I would return the Sony and replace it with the Pioneer as "the Sony is by far the best and most compatible burner out there". I explained the issue I had and that Sony support claimed the problem was not with the burner and that I disagreed with that. I was prepared to pay their $45 re-stocking fee in order to get a burner that worked for me.

Well... as soon as I got the new Pioneer burner home within a few minutes I had burned a DVD-R using my Ritek G04 printable media and verified that it plays perfectly now in ALL of the players I have... including the sony portable player that would not play the ones burned in the Sony 530.

I think that proves it for me at least. Pioneer wins.
