Sony HDR-FX1 audio recording

I have just compared the spects of the new Sony HDV consumer camera to the HVR-Z1 pro version and find while the pro version has XLR inputs and volume dials the FX1 has 1/8th" stereo plugs and only auto audio gain.

Does this mean that the consumer model needs a XLR to 1/8th mic preamp/mixer unit while the pro version does not? Or is a mic pre still beneficial even with the pro camers XLR inputs and controlable gain?

If you've got balanced audio in I can see no point in external mic preamp, in fact I can see many good reasons not to use one. Apart from anything else just having the XLR connectors is a big plus, I've had two clients loose stuff due to minipin plugs coming unplugged, very ugly.
Of course the pro version fo the camera add a bit more to the vision side as well, like 720p.

I guess with the basr FX! an XLR to mini plug adapter needs to be PERMANENTLY afixed to the camera.

I also add if you cannot turn the AGC / limiters off on the consummer version I'd be giving it a wide berth, although you could buy a decent sound recorder like the Power Core or Fostek FR-2 for the difference.
