Sony HDR-SR1 hard drive hi-def cam

Anyone have any experience with this puppy? It uses MPEG2 and H.264 to record images to hard drive. How will vegas handle this? I assume an intermediate file will be necessary to achieve any kind of decent frame rate while editing. I also read where VEGAS 7 will support native AVCHD which is what this is.

No one has experience with this cam yet, the preproduction models are just getting out there for field testing by NDA'd people right now.
That said, the UX1, which is the same cam, is in my hands at this moment. NDA prevents me from commenting on editing or NLE, but can tell you that in its price class, it's a very impressive cam. HC3 is slightly preferable to my eye, but not so much so that I'd abandon AVC-HD. In the Sony cams, its currently only a consumer format, and will likely be so for a while. Remember, it's significantly more compressed. Some people will say "it's more efficient" but the bottom line is, it's more compressed. But impressive for what it is, nonetheless.

Thanks Douglas,

I would love to get my hands on a few frames of AVC-HD. Any chance of posting a sample?

Can't post a sample, as the NDA precludes me posting pre-production footage. Someone posted footage on DVInfo.net tho.
You can get an idea of my early opinion on the cam here though. If this preproduction model holds true to other models in the past, it's likely undergoing a few last tweaks before they really start pouring off the line.

Read your review Spot, sounds like this is a winner. I can't wait for the SR-1. Every camcorder I have ever owned has always failed in the tape deck. Not the camera itself, but the bloody tape deck. I am really anxious to get one with very few moving parts. I realize that a hard drive is a hard drive and shock issues will be a concern, but I can't help but think that this technology will last a little while longer than tape based systems. And the return of the mic/headphone jacks! Is there any manual control for audio or is AGC the only option?
