Sony HDR-UX1

Spot- saw your preview of UX1and have 12 days left to test it.
1) re AVCHD format: HDR-UX1 mini-DVD vs HDR-SR1 hdd - which?
2) on AVCHD format: HOW bad is it to key?
3) on recording to 8-cm miniDVD - Can you only download via USB from camera + provided Picture Motiuon Browser 1.1 OR can I instead pop mini-DVD into computer's DVDplayer and 'capture' import>DVD disk into Vegas7?
4) When I shot with it today, I attached an AKGC1000S via Beachtek box and had perfect audio-- until I hit record and then could heard noise that suspiciously sounded like the internal spin of the mini-DVD. Could this be?

So far-- the diskiness of the thing has already got me riding the fence. Are there any hidden compatibilities with Vegas 7 or advantages to the mini-DVD workflow that you've uncovered about the cam/format since writing your ( terrifically helpful, btw) review?

Thanks in advance and--

bestx3,
bt

Quality is identical between UX1/SR1. Just different media storage
Tough to key...
slow to edit.
Me...I won't be buying AVCHD for a long, long time. VERY CPU intensive. I'll be more open when a direct convert to an intermediary is better.
I like the discs, but bear in mind that they're more for families that have (will have) a BD player and want to show them from the disc vs any real serious editing.
Some folks claim AVC HD will take over the world of professionals...I highly doubt it. AVCHD is currently *only* a consumer format, and so for a while, I expect development of serious tools beyond import to NLE's will be very slow.
Yes, you likely heard the spin of the DVD. I heard the same, but was told that would be damped on final production models.

Here's another way to think about this:
Which of the low end (less than $1500 HDV/AVCHD rigs would you own to have at least one cam/finger in highdef?
HDR-HCRC HDV w focus ring +ext mic + tape
HDR-HC3 HDV+ tape
HDR-UX1 AVCHD w focus ring + ext mic + miniDVD
HDR-SR1 AVCHD w focus ring + ext mic + 30 g hdd
Canon HD10 HDV + best optics? + sturdiest build + tape

OR should I just wait-- and rent???

Lightning response!

-- thanks Spot.

It was that sound that I most needed confirmation on.

Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't recommend the HC10 to anyone. You might want to read this one before buying. It could also be that there are two of these camcorders that are bad off the factory line as well.

Apparently Cineform has plans to support this format.
