Sony Movie Studio Platinum 8

I had my old family analog movie tapes converted to DVD's. I have no problem playing the DVD on TV. When I try to play the DVD on my computer I only get video but no sound. This goes with Windows media player as well. The speakers are working great in that I can play other videos already on my computer as well as watch DVD movies or watch TV. Why is it that my computer does not recognize the audio on my home movies.

The audio is probably in AC3 format and you probably don't have an AC3 codec installed that media player can use. This seems very unlikely to me though because generally any computer capable of DVD playback has AC3 decoders installed with the DVD playback software. So, that makes me scratch my head a lot.

Try the File / Import / DVD Camcorder disc function in Vegas and see if that will read the discs properly.
