Sony Pictures Sound Effect Series????

On the back cover of the May 2004 Videomaker there is a little black box being introduced as the Sony Pictures Sound Effects Series. A comprehensive, dynamic, five-volume collection of sound effects from the Sony Pictures studio archives.

Sounds cool. Where is it? How much does it cost? Can I order it with my Vegas upgrade?

That is the freebie stuff that came with Sound Forge 5.0. What they announced with Vegas was a 5 disc volume that they obtained from the Sony Pictures archives.

Maybe they'll release it before the end of the week.

$399.96!

Just found it in the online Summer 2004 catalog.

http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/artwork/fullsize/directcatalog.pdf

It's on page 7 of the PDF file (page 12 of the print catalog).

Seems pricey for 1,200 effects given that the old SOFO 1,001 Sound Effects disk cost $15.96 and was given away free with purchase of certain apps. These must be awesome sound effects.

I've listened to some original SONY sound effects in PCA (Perfect Clarity Audio) and they are very high quality and completely noise free. I don't think this package will be any less.

$399, WOW!!!

They must not be counting on much demand. I might have to wait a little bit on that one.

Actually, I picked up a copy of the General 1600 awhile back-- trust me, $399 is a VERY tempting price! While it doesn't have the depth (yet) of the General, I imagine that it will over time & I like the idea of being able to buy a library in (essentially) installments of 4 or 5 discs.

>And quite often, a filmmaker needs to enhance a particular sound for dramatic effect. Footsteps in a horror flick. The tick of a clock in a suspense movie. Crowd noise in a sports film. That last sound, by the way, is called "walla." <

Foley is pretty much a grab bag term for any random sound effect you need for whatever purpose. The folks on Hollywood who make all those bangs, plonks, slaps, squishes, etc. that you hear all the time are the "Foley Artists".

$399 for a collection of good sound effects set is a STEAL I seem to recall the official BBC library coming in at something like $199 per disc, and that was back on the ol' 12" LP records.

Hmmmm, gets me thinkin' ... maybe i should collect the hundreds of sound effects i've created for live theater productions over the years and produce a disc or two of my own ...

"Walla" is people in a location. Street Walla for example = random people heard in a street environment, probably with some cars and other street noises. Concert Hall walla = the audience as they sound before the concert. Yeah, you get it.
