Sony: Please Vegas Update without MediaManage

mdopp wrote on 9/21/2005, 1:10 PM
Hi,
I'm running a ISDN connection here and you have no idea how long it takes to download a 100 MB update (4-5 hours - if it doesn't fail !).
Even worse when you know 70% of the file is just the media manager that I will be switching off on first startup.
Sony: PLEASE post an alternate version of the update WITHOUT that blody media manager !
Thanks
Martin

Sony should rip it out for Vegas 7 and sell it or supply it as a seperate modular add-on.

Based on the feedback I have seen here and elsewhere on the web, this Media Manager has severely tarnished the reputation of Vegas.

There is a long list of features that are more deserving of 70MB of bloat than the problematic Media Manager.

It's trash and should be thrown out.

Vegas needs its own internal bin system thats of quality.

I use MM all the time. Love it. If you don't like it, turn it off.

according to most people in this forum (and the web), most people don't know what vegas is, and the people who do know love the program... so how has that tarnished it reputation?

sure, there's other things that could of put in instead, but people pissed & moaned for YEARS that vegas didn't have good media managment. They fixed that & now people complain they don't want it.

About the Media Manager and updates

The first point is: The Media Manager is not an essential part of Sony Vegas. And some / many (?) persons do not use the Media Manager. (I am one of these.) Therefore it should not be necessary to download the Media Manager if you don’t use it.

Besides that, it should not be necessary to download the whole application when updates are released.

Best wishes,
Joran

In my opinion the media manager should be an optional app you can download and it should be global for all Sony apps, a bit like Adobe Bridge does.

While I have no use for MM I would hate for anyone at Sony to take away programming time from other tasks just to make this an add on. And am I wrong that you can uninstall it ? Not sure what effect it has but if I recall correctly it is listed separately in Windows under Add/Remove.

Ok . .I love MM!

It makes my edit decisions intuitive and has helped me trawl through audio and assisted me to think "sideways" about an option. For me it is like trawling through my own sketch books. It is my source material encyclopedia, but online. I can view and scrub clips in an urgent and targeted way. I like "seeing" an enlarged thumbnail and being able to be reminded about my media. I truly appreciate the subtle and flexible searching facility. The TAG thing? Well, I guess I could use it, and maybe I will.

I would hope that as others use it and ways of making it work more seamlessly for others, then this utility could become another of Vegas' selling points.

Overall, Sony please do NOT remove it. By all means let us have the ability to be able to "disengage" it if we wish. But remove it from future updates? No.

My feeling? USE it or LOOSE it! . . I use it, and think that it is a valuable tool for this messy editor!

Oh yes! Might I have the ability to "print-off" sheets of thumbnails - I would like to use these as a kinda storyboard facility? Maybe in the future MM would provide a "white-boarding" facility to allow us to push and shove clips about to form a story? Then maybe . . those "arranged" mind-mapped clips automatically arrange themselves on the time-line as the video .. . . koolllll .. .

Along with others hereabouts, I use a fab, quietly developing, s/w package called Inspirations - I've been a devotee since Insp 4, I'm now on v6, the latest is v7 - which uses Mind Mapping and graphical linkage to create either a Word type outline OR a Diagram of the ideas and concepts. Something that would compile and coordinate events and media in a "mind-mapped" way would surely be an option to persue with NLE-ing.

Hey what am I doing?!?! I'm coming up with suggestions to make MM better! And that's 'cos I've been using it! Well I never . . clever folks these Sony Folks!

Best regards,

Grazie

Even though I have it disabled I do think it's a great feature and no I don't think it should be internal to Vegas. If it's internal then firstly the Vegas code base becomes very bloated and secondly it would make it very hard for 3rd party apps to access it.
Bigger question seems to be is why are the server files locked?
Pretty silly as for a few dollars one can buy a quite legitimate password recovery program and open them anyway and come on, it is our data in there.

1/- "If it's internal then firstly the Vegas code base becomes very bloated and secondly it would make it very hard for 3rd party apps to access it." . . I don't understand? Surely any new "feature" would then have the same effect? Are you saying we should not have new features so to keep Vegas lean and mean? I like having new features .. I like having software that adapts and improves. And pcs are getting faster too.

" . . secondly it would make it very hard for 3rd party apps to access it." true, however new features do not necessary preclude involving 3rd parties here?

As to the "Bigger" question , maybe for you is the server thing. I have now idea what the locking up means for the humble likes of me? If I did I might agree or have an opinion.

If you want a really, REALLY bigger question then maybe it is about: "Should Vegas and its development strategy be aimed at such a broad church?"

Maybe we ARE seeing the start of "Plug 'n Go"; "Mix 'n Match" . . yeah?

No, I want all the features to be present at the time of loading - this way I CAN be assured that everything IS working. Its the 10,000 rivets flying in close-formation concept - given to the Spitfire was it? - How SteadyHand files not previewing to external monitor from Vegas5 to Vegas 6b happened, goodness only knows! - But I have now got THAT back ion Vegas6c.

The BIG question is about strategy development, NOT the details.

But, hey .. . what do I know?

Grazie

. .. ps, still love MM! :-)
