Sony releasing my film Tuesday - Edited w/Vegas 4!

fwtep wrote on 4/6/2005, 10:34 AM
On Tuesday April 12th Sony will be releasing the DVD of a film I made. It was mostly edited with Vegas 4, though there's some FCP also. (The editor used FCP but due to budget and his schedule, I had to finish the film myself, in Vegas 4. I'd say that 65-75% is Vegas, though even the remainder had tons of tweaks and changes done in Vegas.) The sound was done completely in Vegas (Spot's V4 book was VERY helpful). I also did all of the visual FX myself, on the same computer.

The movie may not be everyone's cup of tea-- it's a low budget Bigfoot film-- but it was a lot of fun to make. It was shot on film, though if I were doing it today I'd do it on HDV or full HD.

So hey Sony, how about a free upgrade to Vegas 6 for me! :-)

Click here to see Sony's web page for the film.

And here's a link to my site for it: Official Site

Cheers,
Fred

Congrats, Fred! Do we Vegas users get a discount? Or at least a sneak peek?

Very, very cool, Fred! Congrats to you on making the film, and for getting some good distribution!

I love it! Badass Bigfoot - I wan't to see this now!

Various answers:

Where was it shot? -- In the wilds of Los Angeles. :-) Topanga State Park, Malibu Creek State Park, and Griffith Park.

Discount or sneak peek? -- Well, _I_ don't even have a copy of it yet from Sony. There's a trailer on the site (http://www.flickerscope.com) but right now that's all that's available.

And Spot, thanks for all the great info in the V4 book as well as several answers to my posts here!

Fred, I'm really excited for you. And you're very welcome for the answers. That's the best payback one could ever get, knowing that a word or two somewhere helped you reach a goal.

Fred, would you mind sharing some of the secrets as to how you got Sony to distribute it? Or any other bits and pieces of knowledge that we all live for
fwtep wrote on 4/6/2005, 12:24 PM
RafalK, things are never quite as they seem-- this is Hollywood, after all. My deal is actually with a company called Silver Nitrate Pictures, but they have an output deal with Sony. Getting distribution for a small film like this is tough, especially when there are no "names" in it. The biggest name I have is "Bigfoot" and at least he's world-famous, which makes it easier to market, as opposed to if I made up some new creature.

One thing that can be a BIG help is to get what's called a Producer's Rep. This is sort of like an actor's agent but for a film. Reps often have good contacts at various distributors and can shop the film around, then negotiate for (or with) you and help with the paperwork and delivery of the final elements. It's best to start talking to a rep early on, like during development or principal photography, but I didn't know any better so I only contacted mine when the film was done. Still, she made my life MUCH easier.

To get this back to Vegas a little, I'm REALLY excited about what I've seen mentioned as upcoming in V6. I wish I had all of that stuff (such as nesting) when I was doing the film. It'll definitely be a great asset on my next project, which is going to be a computer animated holiday special. Plus I might edit a film for a friend of mine over the summer. Vegas 6 where are you???

How did you photograph Bigfoot? I understand he's kinda blurry. *

* I stole that joke from mitch hedberg.

I think there is a Photoshop plug-in to enhance the sharpness of Big Foot. Heard it also works pretty good on the Loch Ness monster.
BTW, Thanks for the insight FWTEP.

First of all, CONGRATS!! Very cool, man. I was wondering though, are these people a possibility for rental? I'm going a little broke right now making my own film, but if it has bonus features then I'd definitely want to pick up a copy to own.
fwtep wrote on 4/6/2005, 6:54 PM
musman,
It should be available at most rental places. I just checked Netflix and they'll have it, but they have the info for the wrong movie. There's another movie called Sasquatch Hunters, which I guess Sony didn't notice when they changed the name from what I had, and lots of places have the info for that film instead of mine.

As for bonus features, sadly there's nothing. There just wasn't time to prepare anything. I'm considering doing a commentary and posting it online as an MP3, but that will really depend on whether anyone even cares.

By the way, if you're a member of Netflix can you let them know that they have the wrong info? I'm not a member there and you can only report something if you're a member. Here's a link to their reporting page sign-in:

I sent the following message to NetFlix:

Hope they fix it soon!

Thanks!!! Although, maybe it's better that people think it's a comedy. :-)

VERY COOL! I will definitely check it out. SHame about the bonus features though. Typically I'm more interested in lower to no budget behind the scenes type stuff, but I guess I'm the minority.
Hope you make a bundle on this and get started on the next one. A friend of mine just sold his movie (totally self financed) to someone who will sell it to Blockbuster. Probably not wording this correctly, but hopefully you can follow me. I think he'll be overjoyed if he just gets back the around $30k he put on his credit card.
Sounds like you got a better deal and I hope you make out well. Looking forward to seeing it!

fwtep, huge congrats man, huge congrats. I'll make sure to pick up a copy here in the near future just to support a fellow Vegas user. And its always cool to watch stuff other people created with Vegas.

Look forward to it.
