Sony RX-10 looks really good. Anyone using one?

Laurence wrote on 3/5/2014, 11:42 PM
I am just realizing that the Sony RX-10 is probably much better than I would have guessed. Yes it's only a one inch sensor, but it does an f2.8 over the entire zoom range and I understand that it reads all the 20 megapixels and averages them down to reduce moiré. This must up the sensitivity to a range that would compete with cameras with much larger sensors that just skip the extra pixels.

Thanks for sharing this, I am also looking at this camera vs the Panny GH3.

Found this interesting on one of the reviews:

Finally, and still summarizing major video features, the camera's 20MP sensor (5K in video speak) is sub-sampled to HD resolution for video, instead of using line skipping. Almost every other hybrid stills / video camera thus far (and that now includes virtually every camera made in the past few years) uses line skipping to get their larger sensor down to the sub-2K needed for HD video. The RX10 is the first camera to sample the sensors raw output in real time at up to 60 frames per second and then record HD video. The advantage of this is potentially reduced moire, and possibly visibly higher resolution with less artifacting of all sorts.

Since I have some investment in m4/3 lenses, I'm more interested in the GH4 coming soon. But $1300 with that lens is compelling.

Yea, If I already had GH series lenses, I'd definitely stick w/ the Panny. (;
One drawback is that the lens is not interchangeable.
Laurence wrote on 3/6/2014, 7:26 AM
I have a GH3 and absolutely adore it. I remember looking at the NEX series and basically dismissing it because you couldn't do manual audio levels. The biggest thing I would miss on the RX-10 would be touch focus on the screen. I use that constantly on my GH3.

One of the new features on the GH4 is true 10 bit color. That would be very appealing to me except that I have my doubts as to whether or not Vegas would actually be able to use it. My understanding is that both VFW and QuickTime are limited to 8 bits so the extra bits would just be truncated. I'm not picking on Vegas here because I am finding conversations on both Avid and Adobe forums which suggest that their programs have the same limitations. This makes me content to stay with the GH3 for now. I don't need 4k.

Footage online from the RX10 looks stunning. Sony has finally done a hybrid camera with decent audio control as well. I must say that if I was looking to buy a camera today and didn't have a collection of micro 4/3 lenses, this would probably be my top choice. Sony really should add touch screens to their RX line though. Well done Sony!

Oooh no touch screen focus... That "could" be a deal breaker.

If you are looking for a Sony camera with the surprising 1" chip - which many of us have found so great in i.e. the RX100 - then why not look at the upcoming HDR-CX900 which has got the same/similar chip - but in a video-camera housing with external buttons, big batteries AND a 50 Mbps XAVC S possibility with 4:2:2 pulldown ...
... the camera is right on the top of my wish list.

If it's really so good, then i like to see it on my computer.
Anybody can upload some native RX10 files to somewhere?
thanks a lot

Here you go, 01330 and 01224. To download the original you need to be a Plus member:

I quite like the camera. If I had known the HDR-CX900 and the FDR-AX100 were forthcoming I probably would have not purchased the RX10. However, I do a lot of photography and it is more than satisfactory for me in that regard. One problem is the lens when fully extended is prone to wind vibration, albeit ever so slight, but living on an island where it is forever windy this is a problem for me. I imagine the CX900 and the AX100 will not have that problem. The other very significant advantage with these two is the probably more robust codec, as Ritmer mentioned.

If you need shallow depth of field, better low light performance or want a better codec for grading, then GH3 + good glass >> RX10.

I did and Love it!

I can still use Viewfinder (compared to Canon/Nikon DSLRs). With addition of ND filter and OSS, I can work less-stressful than previously I did with Nikon D5100.
A f/2.8 all the way from 18-200 is a WOW factor for other to be 'jealous'! :D

Just need to pay attention with:
The zoom is a little bit slow during movie recording, so I just have to plan to change from Close Up to Long shot.
Also need to be careful with Peaking mode, even in the lowest level.

If I need simple and quick DSLR-alike, this a way to go.

Video quality comparison of the RX10 should be as good as the FDR-AX100 (4K) cam and slightly better than the RX00, according to this review:

The FDR-AX100 features the same 1-inch image sensor that is found in the compact RX100. It's a 20-megapixel chip with a BSI-CMOS design that produces exceptional image and video quality, even in low light. And, like the RX10, the video readout from the image sensor is continuous, so there's no line-skipping. The real-world result is better video quality: A side-by-side comparison between the RX100 (which skips lines when outputting 1080p video) and the RX10 shows that the RX10 has a noticeable edge in detail.

Both the RX-10 and RX-100 (which was delivered today) seem to use a combination of optical and electronic motion stabilization which gives surprisingly smooth hand held footage. I don't believe any other manufacturer does this double electronic/optical stabilization. I can't think of any other camera that does pixel averaging instead of skipping other than the RX10. These are both great features with strong practical benefit.

http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sony-surprise-new-firmware-update-for-the-rx10-gets-xavc-s-and-rx100m3/

This is a very surprise 'gift' from Sony, new firmware update enable XAVC S codec recording plus 100fps (PAL) or 120fps (NTSC) recording in 720p!

Just did mine, but now the new challenge is to find suitable SDXC card for this (hopefully it is available in my country as well). Any recommendations for choice ?

How far can the LCD screen be moved? Can it be turned forwards for a mirror image?
set wrote on 8/30/2014, 10:09 AM
Hi Arthur.S,

The LCD is only tilted up and down, helping low-angle or high-angle shooting only, cannot be turned as mirror, but you can trick it via playmemories mobile, connectivity via wifi, and use your iphone / android phone as monitor.

Laurence, what Sony is doing right now with their consumer cams and video is incredible. If the RX10 looks like it would fit your needs, I wouldn't hesitate to get one.
Byron K wrote on 8/31/2014, 1:36 PM
BestBuy has the RX100 on sale this week for $1799.
I was reading some of the reviews and the thing that people mentioned multiple times is the rolling shutter effect when panning in 4K, which is understandable because of the large sensor size.

Laurence, did you receive the RX10 or RX100? Either way, I'd be interested to hear your opinion. (;

My main camera is a Panasonic GH3, but a few months ago I got a Sony RX100ii and must say that I'm really impressed. That's what got me thinking about the RX10 and how good it likely would be.

I was just reading the full review on DPReview and they made this interesting observation, comparing it to the Pany GH3:

"The RX10 also excels against the video-centric Panasonic GH3 as well as full-frame cameras like the Sony Alpha 7. What we're getting at here is that the DSC-RX10 arguably has the best video quality that we've seen."
