Sony's low data rate BD settings

We all know BD supports up to 40Mbps. And, many movies -- that are only 24p -- use the full bandwidth. Yet, Sony's settings are defined at about half the possible rate.

Moreover, in many/most cases you can NOT override these values. For example, MainConcept is locked at a maximum of 25Mbps. I'd expect a 35Mbps option for MPEG-2.

This is particularly odd given that AVCHD on red-laser can use 18Mbps -- some report 20-25Mbps -- yet Vegas BD only supports 20Mbps to 25Mbps. The way Sony has set this all up is there's no big reason to buy a BD burner to get higher quality. This limitation will be an even bigger problem now that 24Mbps AVCHD camcorders are here. This is higher quality than Sony supports to BD.

I agree with you that this is not ideal at all. But then again, you must understand that software always had these kinds of cycles too. The first apps that used to burn DVDs equally sucked -- from terrible mpeg2 encoders, to very few options. Now, we almost can do everything we want with DVDs and DV videos, but HD/BDs are still not there, not fully supported as we want them by our software.

What I am saying is that it's a matter of time. HD is still new. BDs even newer. It will take 1-2 more years before you see more settings. And this is true for all consumer software and most Pro software too, not just Vegas Platinum. You might need to pay thousands of dollars to get a BD encoder suite that does everything you want at this time.
