Sony's new video PC comes with...Premiere?

Take a look at this:
http://news.sel.sony.com/en/press_room/consumer/computer_peripheral/desktops/release/27229.html

I was shocked to see them say that Premiere is "the essential tool for professional video editing"

I have nothing against Premiere as it is a GREAT tool, but someone at Sony marketing is getting fired for that one!

Of course they also called a terabyte of storage "staggering". Hmmm. Love that marketing talk. ;)

At their site I can see what looks like dual HDMI input ports. Nice.

I am in the market for a new PC - either pre-built or home-built. Anyone have any thoughts on this new Sony?

Wanna bet? Its been going on for ages. Ain't nothing changed but the time of day.

HAHAHAHA... another case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing?

If I worked for Adobe, I would be quoting Sony on this one!
:)

Well, kind of lends credibility to the other thread that asked if CS3 would kill Vegas. To those that don't understand that they are two separate divisions, it would be easy for most to interpret that PP is better since even Sony isn't bundling their own software.
Andrew B wrote on 4/9/2007, 10:14 AM
Totally.
I just shot a message to the senior VP regarding this. I doubt he (or his assistant) will even look at my email, but I felt better knowing I at least said something.
I used to work for a large corporation and this stuff happened all the time.
Personally...I would like the PC better if they didn't bundle software with it, since I already own Vegas. I will probably just end up putting my own machine together...and put my savings towards a V1 camera...

Well Premier is ahead of Vegas when it comes to GPU video acceleration. The chances are that the same graphics configuration will work well with Vegas once it catches up in GPU acceleration.

Not really. More a case of one person's left hand not knowing -- more accurately, not caring -- what their step-brother's right hand is doing.

Other than being owned by the same larger conglomerate, there is almost no connection between the makers of Sony computers and the makers of Vegas. They are individual, distinct corporations each with its own bottom line. While, yes, it would be nice if Sony Creative Software got a helping hand from the larger legs of Sony, there's not really much incentive for the latter to lend it.

in my little mind this was expected in the first year or so sony bought vegas,, but now it is just plain ignorant. Brand recognition I would think is important to a gazillion dollar company,, but guess when you get that big a little segment like video editing makes no difference.

this stunning new gaffe shows us just how (un)important Vegas is to Sony, big-picture.

wow.

what a slap in the face to vegas and us users. from sony.

yes I'll always love Vegas, it's a fun application... but hmm I think I'll be checking out the competitive apps like PP/CS3/Avid etc... their new releases may be more vegas-like, and since they're coming from dedicated software giants, they'll likely eat vegas' lunch.
too bad, vegas grows on you, after you've used it for hundreds of hours... :p

I know that Sony has bundled PP with their systems in the past. However, considering they are still doing it, I am thinking I may need to change to PP. If Sony recommends a competitors product over their own, I guess I need to change!

intel i-4790k / Asus Z97 Pro / 32GB Crucial RAM / Nvidia GTX 560Ti / 500GB Samsung SSD / 256 GB Samsung SSD / 2-WDC 4TB Black HDD's / 2-WDC 1TB HDD's / 2-HP 23" Monitors / Various MIDI gear, controllers and audio interfaces

It's not a stunning new gaffe, just the continuation of an old arrangement.

My last purchased laptop, a Vaio, included Premiere, till I deleted it.

It also has another video editing app made by Sony called "DVgate Plus", which, far from being an old remnant, includes the ability to capture and edit HDV. Again, I assume it's from a different division of Sony.

I agree it's time they sorted all this out - I expect there's a Premiere contract agreement somewhere ....

the early SOny Vaio's also included premiere or premiere elements.. this has been hapening for a lil over 4 yrs now i think.. nothing new..

Exactly... very nothing new here...
I wonder if they could bundle me a Panasonic camera with brand new Vegas when I finally go HD...

They (computers vs. editing s/w) may be different divisions, but can you imagine a Sony computer coming with a free subscription to the online Wii community?

Well, yes - for the same reasons.

It's a decision by the marketing department at the computer manufacturer what software that they want to license a bundle with. Maybe they bought PP because of the better name recognition than Vegas. Maybe the license with PP gives them an exclusive position in the bundle. Maybe Sony Computers may have purchased a million licenses of PP for a dollar each. We may never know.

Sony Computers will license and bundle whatever software they think will sell more computers.

Or maybe an agreement was made long ago that hasn't expired at this time...or maybe...lots of other possiblities.
let your imagination run rampant, and you'll still likely be closer to accurate than not.

Still hasn't expired? Dang. That's just crazytalk.

I still think the best marketing move Sony Creative Software could make is to let every Sony employee in the world have a vegas license. It would increase brand recognition all over the world.

Cripple it so that they have to activate it every few months, to prove they are a Sony employee, but it still would be a good move.

I downloaded Sound Forge 9 today on a work computer and the IT guys were like "Sony makes Sound Forge? Didn't it use to be someone else?."

I hate to be the killjoy on this subject, but Sony is right.

"Bundled with Adobe® Premiere® Pro 2.0 software, the essential tool for professional video editing."

This is true. Even though we are professionals, and we use Vegas, it's no secret that most pros don't. And if your ultimate goal is to work in television, you'd be wasting your time learning Vegas.

For cable, broadcast or post production, the expectation is for you to be schooled in Premiere, Avid or FCP. If Sony wants to tap that market, that's their prerogative.

You have to take ego out of the equation.

If Premiere is actually on that list, it hasn't been for very long.

Today we're spending a lot of time trying to nail down some of the crash-o-matic features of PPro2. (That's a little unfair. It isn't crashing fair and square, it's just locking up irrevocably. I wish it would actually crash dead.)

While I don't know if Madison will compete, they definitely could. Overall, you'd get more done in a day.

Premiere isn't on the list.
Avid
Avid
Avid
Quantel
Discrete
FCP just barely edging into select markets
Edius and Vegas are about neck and neck in the broadcast market due to XDCAM and hopes for Infinity. You'd be happily surprised if you had any idea of who is using Vegas in the "real" world.

Could be a smart marketing move by Sony.

Sell Sony pc with premiere, especially laptops, Premiere runs like crap on it, and they are forced to buy Vegas. :-).

3-4 years ago, this actually worked, maybe still does. Because premiere back then was like a really , really bad joke.

Fair enough, but name just one college where you can receive a BFA in filmmaking and video production that has Vegas in their cirriculum? I can link you to a number of colleges that are teaching Premiere, alongside FCP, Media 100 and others.

Or better yet, link me to a industry classified ad for someone in search of a Vegas editor. Again, you'll find many listings for Premiere editors.

So I dunno, all that sounds 'real world' enough to me.

Seems to me we'd get some sort of comment from Sony folks here on this very forum but then again...

SFX: Crickets.

They probably moved the forum administrators over to Vegas marketing for extra help. Oh wait, Vegas marketing doesn't exist. My bad.

Dunno about Classifieds, but Craigslist has a number of em'.
We receive at least one, and usually more calls each week from folks seeking Vegas editors. We occasionally get calls for other referrals too, of course.

Columbia...Their transfer program starts with College of DuPage, and they use Vegas in both academic labs.
They're by far not the only one; we've seated Ultimate S at many colleges, but we have a connection to DuPage/Columbia, so gotta wave their flag a bit. :-)

Industry classified? Couldn't tell you, I don't read em'. But we did get a call from a major industry mag a month ago looking for a Vegas editor that could put together internationally distributed content for the DRM conference in two weeks.
No one is suggesting Vegas is as well known as Premiere. It's hard to compete with an app that came free with every scanner and still camera for many years. And still is the most OEM'd app in the video industry. But in the broadcast and corporate editing world, it's Avid, Quantel, and Discreet. FCP, Vegas, Premiere are getting their foot in the door, as is Canopus Edius, but those particular worlds are far behind the "real" world.
Last month I presented to SMPTE at Dreamworks. Half the audience hadn't heard of Vegas, and some of them aren't even familiar with FCP. They're all fulltime editors and/or shooters. But in their world, what they use is what they know.
