Sony Vaio Computer not recogonizing Sony Camcorder

Finatic wrote on 6/9/2003, 6:35 PM
Hey folks,

I went through the first 300-400 or so postings to try to get an answer but no luck so it might be quickly resolved by just posting here.

I have a friend who is a newbie user to Vegas 4, he has a brand new Sony Vaio computer with DVD burner, built in firewire and all that.

He goes to do his first capture and plugs in his Sony TRV530 and Vegas doesnt recogonize the camera or that any device is attached, he doesnt heven have the option for Smart Preview or Always preview.

Usually you just plug the cam into the firewire and viola! you are ready to capture but so far its a no go for him so any help would be appreciated.

I have a brand new Sony Vaio and I have never had trouble connecting or downloading tape via firewire. I have a Sony VX-1000. I would call Sonic Founry and ask them.

OK, I am the friend with the problem... am I using the right cable? The end coming out of the camcorder is smaller than the one going into the PC (which is USB)... it's the cable that came with the camcorder. Should I be using something different?

I have had that problem since the days I used Videofactory. I have never been able to resolve it. Right now I am capturing with the Sony DVGate Motion software and PTT with Sonic Foundry's software (I believe it's v2.5 that came with Video Factory). SF told me that I need to get another firewire card. I even tried the Sony patch but that didn't work either.

You shouldn't be going into a USB. Their should be a firewire input on the front of the Sony VAIO. If you are coming into firewire, Vegas should see the camera and be able to control it. If not check your device controller to see if there are any problems with the firewire card driver.

If you read the VAIO help pages - you will see that the VX-1000 is *NOT* Supported.
I also have a GR-370 Vaio Laptop a VX-1000 and a TRV-8. The TRV-8 is supported and works - and the VX-1000 - does not.

It doesn't make sense - that that's the way you will find it.

I have a Sony VAIO (See my first message above) and I capture video nicely from my VX-1000 with firewire. I have never had any trouble. Sorry, the VX-100 IS supportable.

Finatic and EvlisHitler, have you been through all the steps outlined HERE? If you haven't done so, you should. Also, perhaps you just misunderstood the connector on that cable. The end of your firewire cable that goes into the OHCI IEEE1394 port on your PC sort of looks like USB, but it's not. Vegas is engineered to work with OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) IEEE1394 devices. That requires a "firewire", also known as Sony I.Link, cable to connect your IEEE1394 device to your PC.

Hope this helps,

This excerpt was copied from the Help Files contained within DVGate on my Vaio Laptop.

Precautions (Common)

This program can only control household DV devices
manufactured by Sony (limited to models sold in the country
where the computer was purchased).
DVgate Motion has been confirmed to work with household DV
devices models equipped with an i.LINK connector (including
media converters and Digital 8) sold before the end of
September 2000. (As of October 10, 2001)

[In case you use Sony Digital Video Camera Recorder DCR-VX1000
/DCR-VX700]
If your computer is a Windows Me or XP machine, this software
cannot be used in combination with DCR-VX1000 and DCR-VX700(
terminal connected later on during after sales service.).

[In case you use the SONY digital video cassette recorder]
If the Windows Me is installed on your computer and you
first connect to the
digital video, [Add new hardware Wizard] dialog appears and
[AV/C Tuner] is detected. In this case, please select
[Automatic search for a better driver (Recommend)] and click
[Next].
[Windows was unable to locate the software for this device]
appears, however, there is no problem to use the DVgate
program.

Any Thoughts?
