Sony Vegas deleted my files

rado-l wrote on 11/6/2016, 5:35 PM

So I wanted to put like 6 or 7 clips into sony vegas pro 12, and i dragged them from the folder to Sony Vegas Pro. After that, i decided i wanted to put them one by one and edit them one by one, so i pressed Ctrl+Z.

I oppened the folder only to find all my clips gone and the only thing that was left were the .mp4.sfk files...

Can anyone help me? If so, thank you very much in advance.

This should never happened as Vegas Pro should not have any ability to delete any files...

But, you may want to try recover your file using Recuva.

Useful freeware for me

As SET says, Vegas can't delete files from your hard drive; from your project, yes, hard drive no. Have you tried using the Windows "Search|" function to see if the files have been written to a different place on the computer?

There most certainly is a procedure within Vegas Pro to delete files from the Hardrive - but you/we have to do this knowingly!: 🔨

Stage 1

Stage 2

Then on reopening Vegas you get this warning:

And the Timeline gives you this:

However, our colleague here hasn't said that there are empty Events. So, there has to be another way that this "deletion" has happened.

. . . i decided i wanted to put them one by one and edit them one by one, so i pressed Ctrl+Z.

Is it at all possible that instead of pressing Ctrl+Z, you inadvertedly pressed Ctrl+X ? This would indeed delete the Events, but this would still NOT delete original files from Hardrive.

Have you tried a complete reboot of your system?

Could you post a Screengrab of the actual Vegas Warning?

Update: I've tried experimenting with a media file... You CAN delete the file from Vegas' explorer.

But, I can still find the deleted file at My Recycle Bin.

Sure, we need to find out from our colleague what steps have been taken to ascertain IF the files still do remain anywhere - including the R-Bin.

Thanks, ill download it in a minute and try it out. Also, yeah first time posting here, thanks for moving it.

As SET says, Vegas can't delete files from your hard drive; from your project, yes, hard drive no. Have you tried using the Windows "Search|" function to see if the files have been written to a different place on the computer?

Just tried it and none of the files show up, except for the .sfk files with the same names as the original files.

Is it at all possible that instead of pressing Ctrl+Z, you inadvertedly pressed Ctrl+X ? This would indeed delete the Events, but this would still NOT delete original files from Hardrive.

I'm pretty sure i pressed Ctrl+Z. See, I use my pc for the bigger part of the day and i am used to pressing buttons so the chance of me pressing Ctrl+X is minimal. But even then, as you said, Vegas Pro should only be deleting its copy of the file.

Also, no, i havent, i just left the PC as it is without closing Vegas Pro or the file explorer in case the solution to the problem is somewhere there. Ill restart it in a minute

There is really no Vegas Warning that has ever come up after that.

Update: I've tried experimenting with a media file... You CAN delete the file from Vegas' explorer.

But, I can still find the deleted file at My Recycle Bin.

Checked my R-bin, its empty. I usually delete files with Shift+Delete so i dont have to delete them again. Might have to change that after that occasion.

Ill reboot and try the program that Set linked and update you with the results,

Big thank you to everyone who took their time to write a possible solution!
