Sony Vegas Pro 13 build 428 64bit

Sony Vegas Pro 13 build 428 64bit continually crashes almost any time I interact with the explorer window to preview clips. If I attempt to rename clips it will crash 90% of the time.

The explorer in Vegas 11 did not have the same issue and it appears that Sony switched the explorer user interface control out for some reason. The Vegas 11 control worked just great, so I wish they had not switch it because it did not work in Vegas 12 and it does not work in Vegas 13.

How do you all rename video clips files within Sony Vegas? In Vegas 11 I would simply rename the clip, on the fly, using the explorer window.

Thanks

Is your hardware specs up to date? Your graphics card listed could very well be the culprit as according to the specs I looked up, it only has 512MB of VRAM, which is severely underpowered these days. TBH, your listed hardware specs are not conducive to a stable editing experience these days.

I recommend you do a search for the discussion related to preferred graphics cards to use with Vegas. That discussion was an eye opener for me and made me realize based upon other users input to move away from underpowered nVidia cards and go with an Radeon OPEN GL card. I've opted to install a Radeon 6970 card which is to be delivered tomorrow.

With regards to renaming clips, that should be done before any editing is started. I use a bulk file renaming utility before I do any ingest into the NLE. I also do the same with my dual sync audio files. Only then do I begin working with them in Post.

I run right out and purchase a new graphics card and PC soon...

In the mean time, making due with what I have for the moment..

I also bulk rename all my clips using Windows explorer before I start editing.

However, the next step is to add on a bit of description to each file name at the end so I am reminded of what the clip contains. This worked well for years until Vegas 12. They changed the explorer control and it no longer functions as it once did.

They should make the features of their program better not worse.

I have sent the bug reports to Sony but they say they are not fixing it.

You should be able to replicate the issue by just playing and renaming clips in the explorer window.

1. Bulk Rename them in Windows explorer "Event Such as Such". All clips are renamed to EvenName (1), Eventname (2)... and so on

2. Open Vegas and navigate to the clip folder using the explorer window.

3. Start previewing the and renaming clips.

This is where Vegas 11 would work very well. You could auto preview the clips in the trimmer and then quickly rename them by pressing F2.

The clip would immeidately stop playing and you could edit the name of the clip and move on the next one using the down arrow key. Very quick to preview and rename clips.

Starting with Vegas 12, this no longer functions properly.

If you make the mistake of attempting to rename the clip before manually stopping the playback of the clip using the spacebar, Vegas will hang.

In Vegas 13:
1. Preview clip - It plays in the Trimmer window
2. Press F2 to rename the clip and press ENTER

If the clip was still playing, Vegas hangs.

The workaround is to manually stop the play back before renaming the clip. That works sometimes.

I have found that almost any interaction with the explorer window to be somewhat risky.

So now I have to leave Vegas 11 installed on my PC just to rename clips.

Does anyone else use the explorer window in this manner or is there a better way to log and rename clips such as using another feature perhaps? I've just done this for years, so willing to try something new.

I plan on migrating to Mac for Video editing but for now I need to finish this project on my PC.

Thanks

Renaming files using Vegas Explorer window is a known bug in V13. Other versions do not have the problem. See this thread:

>>>>>>Also I've just noticed that if I execute the filename change by clicking on another file in the Vegas Explorer window, instead of pressing <ENTER>, it doesn't crash.

Workaround. (from linked thread) If you modify your procedure slightly you can avoid the bug.

I avoid the whole issue by renaming right after copying files from my media cards to my assets hard drive. I use this utility and it works flawlessly in addition to being free -
Bulk Rename Utility

Thanks for posting that thread. Good to know others noticed the same bug.

I do not have a problem renaming files in Vegas 13 in the Project Media window. Try that instead of the explorer. I just tried rename from the explorer window and got a crash.

You can do mass renaming in Windows by shift selecting files, and the selecting rename from the right click menu. Right click on the 1st file you selected to keep files in order.

I believe the 5700 is the minimum GPU system spec for vegas and has been for a couple versions now.
