Sony Vegas stuck at startup with ASIO driver Yamaha Steinberg USB

Ever since I installed the drivers for my yamaha amplifier, I have been unable to open sony vegas (I have tried both Vegas 10 and 14). At startup, the initial window starts loading in drivers and resources but stops at 'ASIO Driver Yamaha Steinberg USB ASIO...' and a Windows installer window pops up with 'Preparing to install...' but doesn't do anything for 15 minutes or so before failing.
I have tried pressing cancel on the windows instaler window but that aborts the startup.

Hopefully someone will be able to help with this issue as I can't find anything online about it.

According to Yamaha's website, the latest ASIO version is V1.10.4 for Windows. Is this the version that you have installed?

From many years ago, I recall that Sony VP and Sound Forge didn't coexist very well with ASIO drivers for a Creative sound card I then had. I suggest two approaches: 1/ do a safe boot and on VP ensure that the audio device (Options/Preferences/Audio Device/Audio Device Type) is not set to an ASIO setting; or 2/ uninstall the Yamaha ASIO driver (is there an alternative for example an app on a smart phone).
