SONY! Will you charge more for V4.0d users to upgrade to V6?

B.Verlik wrote on 3/24/2005, 2:20 PM
One of the reasons I didn't upgrade to Vegas 5 is because I still don't even know Vegas 4 yet. But I'm slipping behind and might want to upgrade to Vegas 6 instead of jumping up to V5. Is the upgrade going to cost us Vegas 4.0d (Not Movie Studio) users more or not? I'm sure you already know the answer. Can you please tell us now, so I can make plans? Also, how much?

Usually it's been upgrade any previous Pro version for the same price.
Usually.

Oh joy, my favorite thread. I started a huge thread on this last year saying how it wasnt fair that owners of V4 got the same upgrade price as those whose owned V3 and V4.

A year later, a year wiser, I will bite my tongue this time around.

In defense of Sony, even my CAD/CAM software at work is the same way. Up until a couple years ago I'd used the DOS version for about 5 years. When I upgraded to the Windows version (many upgrades between), I only paid the $950US price of the yearly license. I wasn't asked to pay a higher price than all the others that had maintained their software on a yearly basis.

Actually I did bite my tongue as I didnt offer my view on this. <grin> But I am sure with a little searching, someone could find out my thoughts on this.

well, according to their CURRENT upgrade listing, ANY version of Vegas (minus a LE version & not the new Studio version) can upgrade to V5 for $200, or V5+DVDA for $300. That's from Vegas 1 all the way to Vegas 4.

I'd assume they'd keep it that way (and, hopefully give the upgrade people an extra $100 off if they order within the month of release. That's why I'm waiting to upgrade! From V4 to V6+DVDA for $300! :D )

While that's not a bad price, I did buy my version of Vegas 4 + DVD for just a little less than that and it wasn't an academic version either. But I bought it, probably days before Sony took over or thereabouts. (June 2002) In fact, I was looking for a used version of Vegas 3 on Ebay when I accidently discovered a place that sold V4 for about $20. above the academic version and I couldn't resist. I had only been using a computer for about 8 months at that time, and even spending that much money on something I hardly understood seemed crazy at the time. Now I realize how lucky I was. The bad news is I got the main ingredients for less than the upgrade to either V5 or V6. While there'll be some handy tools in either version, they're mostly tools I'll hardly use for quite some time ( I said "Mostly"). I'm not saying they're not worth the money. But as somebody who spent most of their life making no money as a musician, I make up one excuse after another to not spend money. I seem to be at an age where I'm too retarded to be able to change my profession or ability to make any real money.
If they can give the upgrade to V6 cheap enough, I may splurge. I still have lots to learn from Vegas 4 too, so the price is going to be the deciding factor. I may have to investigate this Pinnacle/Avid rumor too. That sounds a little scary. If they really want to "hook me", they'll give that extra $100. off when first released. I wont be able to resist that.

Something about this thread seems to suggest "Please charge me more" for some reason. Maybe it's just me. Or maybe I am just thinking back to when Vegas 4 came out and some of the pundits on the forum were actually ASKING to be charged more for the new version. If you don't believe me do a search. for example.

My system specs says I have Win2k (well, it just lists 2000).

I haven't used Win98 since I left college. And I'll probley upgrade next year to Win64 or 2k5 (if it supports my AMD)

This is something I haven't mentioned yet. I'm working on getting another computer that will have Windows XP.
When I had my present computer built, the OS was the only thing I had no idea of what the difference was between them and I left it up to the guy building my computer. Well it took me about a year to realize that that was part of the way he made money off of me. He gave me Win ME for my OS. I had no experience with computers, and ME, for the most part, has worked fine for me. (Unless you have to multi-task) So I'd like to keep this computer with Vegas 4 installed and then put Vegas 6 on the new one, when I get it. I actually like Vegas 4 a lot and I don't really need too much more, I'd just like to have the extras, just in case. (or to make some things easier. Like not having to frameserve to TMPGEnc to get 2 pass mpeg encoding.)
And no, Craftech, I don't want to be charged more nor can I figure out how you got that idea. I'm saying, there's a point where I'll probably "HAVE" to buy if it's cheap enough, otherwise I probably don't really need it. If they charge more for the upgrade than I paid for the entire original version, I may not need it. And I paid 1/3 of suggested list for Vegas 4 + DVDA, brand new.

Actuatly, I have V4. When 5 was released I wanted to upgrade but at the time I was using track motion presets a lot & couldn't live w/o them. :)

Though I have it, I'm pretty certain I don't use any of the new features in V5.

The only reason I upgraded from 4 to 5 was that I didn't have a DVD authoring program, and for a reasonable upgrade price I could get V5 and DVDA 2.0. It was mostly getting DVDA that persuaded me.

As far as V6 goes, I'm on the fence until I find out if the new features in V6 and DVDA 3.0 are worth the $$$. I don't plan on doing HD for at least a couple of years, so any new stuff or improvements having to do with HD don't mean anything to me.

V5 is extremely feature-rich for what I need it for.

I would like to know if there would be an upgrade path for Vegas+DVD users to just upgrade DVD Architect instead. Vegas 5 does the job for me and all I really need is a DVDA which supports double layer disc burning, assuming it is in the next update.
p@mast3rs wrote on 3/25/2005, 5:58 PM
If history is any indication, I would be no. Seems like either all or nothing when it comes to DVDA. I use Encore DVD instead as it provides everything I need (even DL).
