If you choose to modify the behavior of that feature, please make it an option - a checkbox in the profile setup maybe. There are advantages to the current method. I wouldn't want to miss the replies.
What would really be interesting is a "Views" display which would show the number of times a thread has been read.
I'm not trying to disrespect your idea, but you can only expect so much defense from the occasional bozo. There is an out - perhapse imperfect. If there is going to be any new programming done, let it be on Vegas.
Even without the 'Ignore User' button it's not like you have to read something if you don't want to. I know it's a bit like a multiple fatality road accident, you wish it hadn't happened, you really don't want to look at it but somehow you just have to.
Best analysis I've read from the experts is it makes us feel better, we realise it could have been use and how lucky we are that it wasn't.
When I read some of the pointless and offensive stuff that passes for 'helping our fellow man' on this and other sites, as much as I wince at the time, I find it rather cathartic.
I agree that these boards could be a lot better. Snitz (if it still exists) is a much better ASP-based forum. I'm sure there are lots of others that are more flexible as well. The content here is great, but the boards themselves are primitive at best.
I like the "primiitiveness" of this board. Smile graphics, icons, tagline, signatures, etc. just slow stuff down. Waste of space. Waste of bandwidth. Simple = good. :)
Steve, AMEN! I really can't think of any features that would improve this forum in the slightest. It gets the job done extremely well with very little unnecessary overhead. Information is presented and searchable. What more could anyone possibly need?
Maybe the ability to include images in a post MAY be useful, probably need something that gets deleted after x amount of time to avoid huge storage requirements. Biggest problem would be yet another way the thing could get abused.
Apart from that I'm of the KISS school, haven't any features on other forums that add anything more than eye candy that mostly detracts from the purpose of the forum.
The only thing that I would really appreciate is to be able to flag a thread. Sometimes if I'm not reading the forum every couple of hours, a topic I'm interested in can easily "sink into the brink" without me noticing it as much traffic as we get here.
