I believe the CMU software is used to join the 4GB chunks. Probably as it also installs a driver it needs the camera to do the install.
There's a forum specifically for this camera and the NX5 at DVInfo, you're far more likely to get answers to specific camera questions there than here.

Thanks for the reply. I hoped that some of the Vegas users might have imported digital content from a Sony "non-tape" product to edit in Vegas. And from what I've read, the only reliable way to transfer the data from the digital media is via the Sony SCM software.

Sorry, but it didn't occur to me that I shouldn't be posting this question in the Vegas forum.

fwiw, I've used the CMU software. As Bob says, it's used to join the the video data (2 GB chunks) and provide a database app for all your video files. Sony's Picture Motion Browser software, which is included with their consumer camcorders, does the same thing.
