sot: sdxc card - raw

ushere wrote on 8/27/2015, 3:05 AM
i was given a 128gb sdxc card to transfer some footage on to.

though the card shows up in windows explorer it is simply as an icon. i have tried the following methods to try and format it:

a. via right click and format
b. via disk manager
c. via gpart
e. via low level formatting tool
d. via sd formatter v4 (this throws up an immediate 'device is locked' error - which of course it isn't)

all the others go through the motions of formatting and then end up with the following error: "windows was unable to complete the format"

anyone have any suggestions on how to format this card please?

Did you check if your SD card controller is compatible with SDXC cards?

opss.. thanks for that - exactly how do i check that?

ok - i tried a sdxc 64gb card in both onboard laptop slot and external card reader. no problem reading / writing to it. could it be the size - 128gb?

i spoke to the client and he says he'll check the other ones he bought.

SDXC specs support up to 2 GB, so I guess if you can R/W with a 64 GB card you have a compatible controller, therefore you should also R/W with a 128 GB card - at least using a computer, cameras and camcorders have their own limitations (better check documentation).

again, thanks.

have decided not to waste anymore time over this and await another card. i now suspect it IS the actual card rather than anything else.

Are you trying to format in exFAT? You should not format FAT32 or below on that sized card.

Have you tried this? The card reader does need to be compatible with the device being formatted.

@ peter - tried exfat and ntfs.

@ astar - see d. in my first post

i'll get back to this thread when another sample card arrives next week.

Struck the same problem when SDHC cards first appeared.
You need a reader that is SDXC rated.
"d" in your OP is what you need however if the card has already been formatted incorrectly it will not work or the card will mount but with some much smaller capacity.

I *think* you need to set Format Size Adjustment to On. in SD Formatter.
Sorry to be vague but it's been quite a while.
