SOT Tascam DR-07 problem

Former user wrote on 9/20/2012, 8:53 PM
It's kind of a problem, but not serious, more of an inquiry.

I have a Tascam DR-07 digital recorder. I transfer the files using the USB port. I have two computers, one for everyday stuff and one for video editing. The computer for video editing will not load the drivers correctly for the tascam, and as a result, will not read the data. I have to use my everyday computer to transfer files since it has no problem at all recognizing the recorder. Both computers are running Win 7 32 bit, the everyday computer is a P4 with a Biostart MB and the video computer is a core2duo, with an Asus MB. I seem to have more problems with USB on the Asus board, but this particular device just will not work on it.

Any ideas or sympathy?

as a side note, the Asus computer reads the USB on my digital camera with no problem.

" I transfer the files using the USB port."

A very tech-savvy middle school librarian cured me of this nasty habit several years ago, and the advice still applies afaik.

Pop the SDHC card out of the device, into the computer, and copy the folder to your desktop. Not only are there no USB issues, the transfer is usually faster (many portable audio recorders and point&shoots are still USB 1.0).

I have Zoom h4, Kodak zi8, Kodak p&s, and Nikon p&s, and they all work better transferring from the card instead of USB.

Yup .. what musicvid said ... if your computer does not have a built-in card reader .. buy a usb plug in one they are way cheap nowadays and most are faster than USB 1

Musicvid,

Makes sense when using the Tascam, but as far as my camera, if I do that, then Vegas would not stictch the avchd files together, would it?

And since I don't have a built in card reader, I would still be using a USB device, just a different one. I do have some USB card readers though and I will try it.

Thanks

I agree that it is faster to read a flash card through a USB adapter than directly from my camera/Zoom/etc. However, I worry about the wear on the gold contacts as I slip the card in and out.

Anything I should take for worry, Doctor?

Dave

My video camera has a hard disk so direct USB connection is the only option for me, but it is horrendously slow. I use PMB to do the copy so that it stitches the AVCHD files together and renames the clip to shooting time and date. My next camera will probably be flash card only, but I will probably still use PMB and camera transfer for the above reasons.

My camera has a fixed 16gb memory and two SDHC slots for additional. so I can go either way, but like my mom use to say "that switch is only going to turn off and on so many times, so don't waste it"..I wonder about pulling cards in and out myself.

Of course SD cards are not that expensive, but I don't want to lose the data with a static charge or something.

I worry too. ;)

The DR 07 is a USB 2.0 device. When you plug it into the computer you are having problems with does it show up in the devices under computer? If so you should be able to select properties and select the correct driver for it.

Tim20,

That is the probem, it sees the Tascam but says it can't load the drivers so I can't access it and it does not know what the device is. This is only on the Asus motherboard. The Biostar has no problems.

That is weird. Does it show up in the device manager as disabled? If it's there you should be able to try to change drivers.

If the MB is using other usb devices it seems most likely it would be on the windows side

Try the following:

1. Try a different USB port (might complete the driver installation if not completed)
2. Different USB cable(USB 2.0)
3. Was software installed BEFORE plugging in the device?
4. Delete drivers and let them reinstall
5. "Scan for New Devices"
6. Did you ever do the firmware update?

I had a card fail once, it was a Micro-SD phone card that was probably inserted incorrectly.
Nikon D8 DSLR had a nasty habit of the card r/w slot going bad after repeated use.
I have read that some AVCHD stitchers work only with the camera, others with the card in a reader. Sorry I don't have direct experience with this.
I've generally had better luck with a card reader (even USB connect) than with transferring from the device.

Tim20,

Under Device Manager it shows up as being unknown.

Craftech, there really aren't drivers, it is seen as a drive, just like a camera. I have used various cables. And I did the firmware update when I first got it. The only I did uninstall the "unknown" device and plugged it in and got the same error. Now I know all USB chipsets are not equal, and maybe my MB just does not like the one on the recorder.

Musicvid, I use Vegas to load the video and stitch it together, but this is under the view DEVICE MANAGER thingy. The camera is not really the problem, and the Tascam is not a big problem, just an odd annoyance.

Understood. Vegas' Device Explorer needs a "device."
;?)
Tim20 wrote on 9/21/2012, 2:21 PM
Ok if you can see it in the device manager as unknown it means it is confused and using the wrong driver then when it doesn't work it disables the device. You should be able to select the properties and manually select from a list.

Look at it on the computer that sees it correctly and verify what driver it is using then go over to the bad one and try to find it in the device manager/properties/update driver.

I'm guessing it needs a generic driver and somehow your new system has associated the wrong driver to the device.

It most likely would.
I cannot say for certain with your camera but I've tried a couple recently without any problem including the RX100 which was released long after Vegas 9 that I used to stitch the files together. All you should need do is copy ALL the files from the camera into a folder on your HDD and then point Device Explorer at the folder.

Bob,

I have not tried that but will. I assumed that Device Explorer needed a device. I will let you know.
