SOT: What's happening to 50Hz HD video?

Maybe I'm being paranoid but:

1) Everyone's talking about 60p as the holy grail. Well fine but what about 50p.
2) Just reading through Microsofts spiel on the VC-1 codec, well no 50Hz HD profiles there either, 24p, 30p, and 60p.
3) Even Vegas seems to have its doubts about 25p HD, WMV presets peg out at 720p, no 1080 at 50p.

Not that I care, I'm all for more fps anyway and 60fps is around as high as you need to go. Just that if we're heading into a 60Hz world anyway why should we wait for Sony et al to release the European version of their cameras when we can ALL be shooting 60Hz?

Bob, I think you'll be hearing more about 50Hz from MS and others soon enough...but you're right, 60Hz is what we hear most about 'round the world. However, a keynote at NAB Post talked about this a bit, that the EU and other parts of the world should simply start shooting 60i converted to 60p with hardware or software algorithms, or shooting 720p60 upscaled to 1080, which doesn't look bad at all.
On a slightly different topic, I suspect we're about to see VC1 explode.

Gee whiz Spot, if you're about to jump on a plane with a V1 that mightn't have been the wisest comment to make, even more so if you're packing a 'chute in your luggage.

It seems to me like MS and VC1 are prepping to try and distance themselves from H.264 AVC in the market. This is surely going to help that feat.

Speaking of VC1, the more I use it, the more I like it. Sometimes even better than H.264 AVC which shocks me to even say that.
