Bob,

There are lots of freeware programs that will do what you want. Here's one:

I use Ace Utilities. Highly recommended.

Ace Logic

You can do a disk scan and it will let you see which folder(s) have the most GB, most files, most folders, etc. You can then drill down to see where the problem lies. You will be amazed at how some programs just litter the landscape with useless cache files, or don't "clean up after themselves" when they close. I saw one program leave over 20,000 useless files behind. This really slows down a disk drive. In fact, I just talked to one client who said he got a big improvement when he did a disk defrag. As people know, I don't believe this does anything. When I started asking what other things he did, he mentioned that the Windows cleanup utility asked if he wanted to empty the Internet cache. He did. That's where the speed improvement came.

Ace Utilities will also show you which type of file is taking up space (often AVI, but sometimes JPG, etc.) and also which files are the largest, across all folders.

Other things it does: finds empty folders; completely deletes disks or folders, so undelete cannot be used to find private files; finds duplicate files (which is the original reason I purchased it); cleans the registry (something I used to do, but which I think generally screws things up more often than it really helps, regardless of what program you use); erases all sorts of history files (you get to choose which ones); fixes invalid shortcuts (amazing how uninstall programs don't really do the job); and removes other flotsam (I put that in for teaktart, who not only knows what flotsam is, but can probably tell everyone the difference between flotsam and jetsam).

Freeware "EasyCleaner" at ToniArts. Cleans up your disks and registry, gives all sorts of information including usage pie charts at every level. Written by a kid and very clean.
