Sound editing in one event

I sometimes need to raise the sound level or want to add a wind noise rolloff but in just one event on the time line. The audio FX in SB affects the whole timeline. I know I can normalize to increase the level, but a cough or some extraneous noises can limit that process. I recall from the distant past that an audio editor could be downloaded to access for this purpose. Can anyone help?

Have you tried just using an Audio Envelope and setting points on the level line to bring up and bring down sound at certain points?

I just tried this. The "v" to open the audio envelope gives me a blue line between the two channels, and I can put markers on that line. I see that this affects the whole track, so I have to put a couple of markers at the start to raise the volume and also at the end to lower it. I can raise the volume in the segment of interest by 6db, including the noises that were already at full track volume. If I use the envelope method to instead bring the loud volume points down, the Normalize function still thinks of them as loud points and has no effect. Am I missing something here?

Is there any way to open the audio envelope on just one event rather that the whole time line?

I'm not sure what you're asking, hb.

By double-clicking on any place on the level line, you can set a point. By making a series of points in one area and dragging some points higher and some points lower, you can raise the volume level or take it out completely at any point in any clip. So, if there was a five second segment with someone talking to quietly, you could raise the volume on just that portion of the clip and, likewise, if there was a cough that you wanted to get rid of, you can shut off the sound for just that half second.

Is there something else you're trying to do? Sorry if I'm just not getting it.

Basically, I see and agree with what you're saying. What I'm wondering is if I can set up the level line in just one event along the time line. I guess it's not necessary if I set a point at the beginning and end of the event I want to modify so the changes don't reflect on other events.

I do have Audicity which I downloaded at one time, but I haven't been able to get it to do much of anything - I need to study it, I guess. I can call it up for the audio of one event, but all I've been able to do so far is turn the volume down.
