Sound is garbled in Vegas

I have this issue that just surfaced sometime in the past month. I'm using Vegas 5.0. It doesn't happen in 4.0.
Any audio played back during preview, is garbled, like it was time-shifted, or resampled at a low rate or something. Sounds like a bad digital cel phone call. There is no problem with rendered stuff.

- I have 2 user accounts on my computer. It only happens when I am logged in as the one that doesn't have administrator priviledges (not sure if that's relevant). So it seems like it must be some setting in Vegas?
- The sound is fine in every other program I've tried
- There is no time-shifting applied to the audio. I tried turning off all Fx, doesn't make a difference
- I tried resetting the preferences by clicking the "Default All" button in the preferences dialog, and I started a new project, but it didn't make any difference. (I also tried holding down SHIFT while starting Vegas - not sure if that resets defaults or anything, but I thought I heard something about that)
- CPU usage doesn't seem to be a factor - it's running about 25% when previewing just audio.

Can anyone think of anything else to try?
