Sound on sound problem

I admit to being somewhat 'routingly challenged' - I have a bed of music tracks (Acid etc) on the timeline in Vegas.
I want to record my accoustic guitar through a mike.

Q: How can I hear the metronome and the bed without recording the metronome and be into the new track?

The only way I've solved this is to use two sound cards and route the metronome and bed through, while recording to the other. Do I have to use two sound cards?

Same thing if I want to hear audiuo from the timeline while recording a new voiceover - if I can hear the prerecorded audio in the cans, Vegas also records this mixed with my voiceover into the new record track.

I'm pretty sure I'm missing something basic here - help appreciated!

There's an audio flow chart in the Vegas manual that might help you get a grip on this. I think it's on page 39 in the V4 manual.
Two soundcards is not a bad idea - or one with multiple ins and outs. On the track head you rightclick and select which in-point you want that track to record. Then you must set up the clicktrack and the others so they do not get routed to that point. It's not hard to do, as long as you keep a mental picture of your own flow diagram.

You must record from the line in or mic in directly. This is done by using your soundcard's mixer.

On consumer grade cards, double-click the speaker icon in the systray > Options > Properties > Recording > OK, select either Line in or Mic. Now only the signal that is present at the input is recorded. If you have What U Hear, Mixed, Stereo etc. selected in this Recording window anything the soundcard plays will be recorded (recorded tracks, metronome etc.).

On pro cards you would select the inputs in Vegas' track usually L or R or 1/2 not the Mixer, Mon/Mixer etc.
