Soundcards n Athlons

I've got an Athlon AMD with 256 MB of RAM, 1.3 GHz speed and a 40 GB hard drive (I also have an extra 40 gig drive somebody gave me--that I haven't quite figured out how to use yet). And a crummy lousy @#$# Sound Blaster soundcard. Does anybody know what kind of soundcard would work with an Athlon? Just from what I'm reading on the boards it looks like I'll probably need one of those external cards (is that true?). I'm currently running ACID pro 3.0 and Vegas LE (I'll upgrade to pro as soon as I have a decent card to make it worth my while) on a Win98 system. I'm hoping to get 2 to 4 balanced inputs, the same amount of outputs (or more), phantom power would be nice (those Monas have that don't they?) but not crucial. I'm new at this stuff but learning a bunch in school about recording (unfortunately they're all MAC Pro Tools guys and I just can't afford to go that route--me poor student.

Thanks for any ideas you can give me.
Terry

Just about every audio card works fine with current Athlon processors running on a newer chipset. Traditionally, audio cards with DSP chips from Motorola had issues, but I haven't heard of any incompatibilities for a while now.

Put a Promise fasttrack raid card and plug in that 40gb extra hd for an 80 gb array that'll be about 50% faster than a single drive. The old ATA 33/66 cards seem to work just fine with newer drives, and they're cheaper.

Consider a midiman Audiophile 2496 and a small external mixer Like the Behringer MX802A whick will give you phantom power and much more control.
I run this lot on a Athlon 1.2 with no probs.

Try the Delta 66 card, 4 ins 4 outs , I have the Delta 1010 8in 8out
and it works great!!!!!!
