Specs for EDL files?

Does anyone know if SoFo has a published spec for EDL files? It seems like it might be possible to write an app that would let you log timecode, export as an EDL file, and eventually "recapture" the "offline" clips.

It would be less unwieldy than the capture utility packaged with vegas. Especially on projects that were logged as they were shot.

Hey Rob,

If you could even convert the decimal to frames (in edit details), that would be handy.

I'm not sure I would spend a lot more time on it tho, if the next version of Vegas is due in Q1 or Q2 of 2003.

Hi Marty,

We've discussed this really briefly before. The goal is to have an application that allows manual logging, filtering on fields (like comments, Tape #, etc), output to EDL that can then be used to "redigitize" footage, and output to text (including fields not used in EDL)

This could be done in several ways:

As an Excel sheet with macros (free for all, usable by most)
As an Access application (all of the tools are there except that I don't know if one can export a project as a runtime app)
As an app written in VB or maybe even Java. (Would cost a little money to buy)

-The timecode would have to be convertable between what the edl uses and the timecode format the user wants to use. EDL always uses what?-frames?-Seconds?
-Seconds+frames? Frames+subframes?
-Other fields would need to be hidden and populated with reasonable default values.
-Comments can be in the file the app generates but not exported to an EDL.

I don't really have the skills for this (except in Access maybe) but I think I know enough to guide someone. I gather there's an SDK available for vegas-at least I've seen mention of it.

It would sure be worthwhile to have a tool like this to complement Vegas.
