Speed issues

Hey guys I have a weird problem.

I have always had speed issues. I have run defender software explore and scan for viruses nothing comes up.

When I run defender software explore it says that explore isnt classified. If I end process on this the screen flashes explore shows as allowed and bamm.. my systems speeds up. but if I reboot I need to repeat this process. Is this a virus or what?

I buy everything no cracked anything in my computer

crack or not, doesnt affect machine performance. in fact, you might be surprised that some crackers have actually reworked certain codes to run more efficiently than their legal counterparts. Either way, that isnt your problem.

what id recomend, would be to only run the software u need to run. In addition to this, pageguard, as well as a decent firewall and antivirus (NOT NORTONS) should be jsut fine

I run
Pageguard
Sygate firewall
AVG Free antivirus
Google toolbar only for the pop up blocker

And thats all.. everything else is system related and doesnt affect performance.

Or use Mozilla/Firefox/Netscape (yes, they really are the same program) instead of IE. It's built in popup blocker works much better than Google's toolbar, and doesn't include all the extra Google crud.

One thing i've been finding in the past few months, which must be due to some recent Windows update, is that every now and then Explorer (not IE) goes crazy and starts eating up the processor. When the computer is idle, Explorer will be using 85 to 95% of the CPU. Even when other software is trying to run, Explorer won't go down below 60%. EVerything else runs at a crawl. What i do then is to kill the explorer.exe process, then launch a new explorer process to get my taskbar and start menu back.

There is a lot of malware/viruses that override explorer.exe. Sounds like you may have a problem.

Have you run Spybot, AdAware and a good antivirus on your machine lately, and have a good firewall? Do all of these things to see if you have a problem. No one program can clean up a PC.

Oh, no need to worry about that. I keep my PCs very clean, since i'm a SysAdmin for a living i'm quite experienced at it. I've even restored explorer.exe from an original Windows install disc and still have the same issue on two different PCs.

Well, it's doing something behind your back. Maybe registry compaction, Outlook compaction, hard drive indexing, defragging, or ?

I'm not a pro system admin but I think I know my PC pretty well at this point, and I have a SystemTray icon (Abpmon) showing CPU load at all times in the form of a line graph. If some rogue process were to start up, I'd know about it pretty quickly. I've turned off any "automatic" features of all the programs I use, including the OS, any time I am given the option. Task Manager consistently shows 69 processes running in the background, but only consuming <1% of the CPU. Knock on wood.

A couple of years ago I had some virus that kept one of the Norton AntiVirus threads pegged. Can't remember exactly how it was fixed, only that it took a lot of effort.
