SpiceMaster & Handwriting effect

I followed the tutorial on the Vasst website for using Spicemaster and a gradient map to simulate handwritten text (or various types of text wipes). In general this has worked fantastic for me. The text I want to put on the screen now, however, is giving me some issues. In spicemaster I modified the following settings to make it a bit more organic - the effect itself looks good - like a flarewriting the text on...

Texture:
Amount 20
X 20
Y 20
Motion 60

Border
Amount 2
Position Inside edge

What is happening is everything looks good up until about 80% of the effect. Then it seems as the gradient approaches the white background, the motion and border parts of the effect start taking over the whole screen so I get a ton of 'fuzzies' over the entire viewport. I only want the text effected. Fine I thought and added a bezier mask that covered just the text -- but it appears the spicemaster effect ignored the mask as I didn't notice any change.

Any thoughts on a work-around / other options that may help keep the spicemaster effect only over the text?

I'm thinking I made it more complicated than it should have been, but seems like I got it working. I had to do the following..

1. Create the image of the text on a transparent BG
2. Create the image of the text on a white BG
3. Create the gradient pattern over the text on a white BG
4. Add the Text Image on White BG to top track
4a. Create bezier mask over each letter in top track
4b. Add invert filter to top track with value of 1.00
5. Add image of the text on transparent BG to second track
5a. Add spicemaster effect w/gradient image
6. Around 80% in spicemaster horizontally leveled out the progress bar.

Produced this result:

New Toys Text 530kb

Here is a screenshot of the result I was getting originally after following the vasst tutorial:

Artifacts 130kb

So, this process sound right - or might there be a different trick to reduce some of my steps (specifically the time eating masking)?

Thanks for any advice to this noob :-)
