Click on the event and then ungroup (keyboard U) and then split. You can always regroup (G) as needed.

Alternately, "Ignore event grouping" temporarily disables grouping. It is in the 'Options' menu or .. ..Ctrl+Shift+U. There should also be a toolbar icon.

Thanks. I'm familiar with both of those - and CTRL+Shift+U would be great if it didn't take a left-handed contortionist..."U" is great, but then you have to select everything to regroup...

Was hoping there was some ALT+ or SHIFT+ that would split & ignore grouping at the same time...

If you have a device like the Contour Shuttle, you could make it a one button operation.
