Put them next to each other - give them a phone each and shoot!

To split the screen and leave the images unsquished - put the 3 videos on separate tracks. Left on top, right below and middle underneath. Click track/motion on the top track and pull the image to the left until you have the size you want. Do the same on the track beneath, but pull it to the right. The lowest track should emerge by itself.
Use pan/crop to get the person in the shot placed in the visual part of the frame.

How much of the background do you need? Sometimes you can Pan/Crop the frame with just them talking. If you P/C as they come to the phone and then tighten up when actually speaking? Line them up in any configuration you feel works for the drama/pace that is going on. You could also zoom up and take back those how are speaking and those that are listening. You may have seen this used to great effect with the "24" hours series with Kieffer Sutherland - yeah? There's lots you can do. Putting them on a white or black ground makes for dramatic effect.

You'd do this best with masks, as you can generate a tiny amount of blur between the shots. There are 2 training files on the Sundance site. Pan/crop and/or track motion will give you a harsh line between images.

Actually - if you need to frame your PIPs you can use the text generator - pick a font with symbols the shape you need - use leading and scaling to make the symbols overlap and fill the space you want - pull down the colour to transparent and add outline - make the outline black and narrow. You need to put this event on a track above the rest.

Remember to save the preset if you want to use the setup again.

Masks are neat, I agree (I assume you mean the cookie cutter) . But it all depends on what kind of shots you are combining. Another word for a harsh line is a sharp line.

Thanks everyone with those answers i'll be busy for alittle while. but i'll come back to let you know which works better for me (or is easier for me to learn in a short time) . anyway to give you a vision of what im doing 3 women talk to each other while they get ready to go to the same club ( im a DJ and it's for my video for my new mixtape). are there any templates for 3 and 4 split screens?
