Its more a personal preference. I myself find it simpler to zoom in, then just snip out what I don't want. You can always use undo to put it back.

I believe it's non-destructive anyway -- so a "split/delete" can just be dragged back if necessary.

I was thinking more along the lines of file size and rendering!

For example if you drag a long clip into the time line and need to edit it you could
1.
split the clip on both ends and keep what your need... or..
2.
you could drag both ends to the same spot where the split would be.

In both cases you are left with the same lenght of clip!

I just wonder if the the file in the second scenario would be bigger for rendering purposes ?

Correct, they both end up the same to the software, it's just two paths to the same destination.
