Only with uncompressed, DV, and occasionally sometimes some MPEG files if the moon is just right and you tossed the chicken bones correctly.

What's wrong with doing it in virtualdub?

Nothing wrong with virtualdub (fantastic for free), but having spend "half my life savings on vegas" would have thought it could have done such a "simple task"

Vegas is an editor, 99.99% of the time you don't need to just repack, but actually recode due to added effects or cuts.
I'd rather Sony spend their time getting the 99.99% right, than adding the 0.01%
Numbers are just wild guesses, in reality the 99.99% may be higher.

For splitting videos, try AviDemux, and set Audio and Video to Copy.
