Splitting file into smaller chunks

I noticed that when placing a long file (meaning also large in size) on the timeline the playback is sluggish while a file (in similar format) that is much smaller i get perfect playback rate. I have to digititize 7 one-hour long interviews and was wondering if i can just split the 1 hour interview into say 5-10 min long chunks. And how?

if you're using a DV AVI or mpeg-2 HDV file, this shouldn't happen. Unless you've got a slow computer.

what's the files you're editing? No specs in your profile eigther.

what's the preview setting? I normally use "preview - auto". Don't forget to have the project = the media properties. That can make a difference.
