Splitting stereo into 2 monos

I want to process each channel of a stereo track individually (different compression, EQ, etc.--each was coming a different mic in our shoot). I know how to hide (or whatever it's called) one channel of a stereo mix, but that's not actually splitting the channels. Or is it? If not, how? Thanks.

Duplicate the audio track.
Right click the upper audio file, and choose Left Only
Right click the lower audio file, and choose RightOnly
Done

Just to clarify, the right- left-channel only option doesn't just HIDE the other channel? It actually removes it?

Then, do I need to/can I merge the two monos back into a single stereo track?

It silences the other channel. You can then take those two files and render them to a new stereo file, yes
