SPOT: midi to wav w/realistic piano sound?

Spot or anyone:

I was given a midi recorded on a floppy from a grand piano.
You know type with weighted keys that can also playback from diskette.

Is there a good program for the pc that can convert to wav that does not
sound like a video game?

Or do I need to set up a mic and record live.

Thanks.

It depends entirely on the quality of the synthesizer (either software or hardware) you are using between the midi source and your recording software. Remember, midi is just a set of switches, not actual sounds.

A good software synth should give you good results. Almost all versions of Cakewalk / Sonar will record directly from midi to .wav. So will Winamp I believe. If you run it through a hardware synth you will likely need to record it analog through line-out/in or duplex recording from your sound card.

ACID and a good VST Instrument - The Grand, Akoustic, Garrinton, etc - would do the job.

The stock-standard MS GS Wavetable SW Synth isn't totally rubbish either, at least not compared to the average SoundBlaster....
