Spot: question re: Sydney VASST

Hi Spot!

I know you're busy, I'll try to be brief.

When you opened as copy in sound forge, and selected a small piece of audio as a sample and used it to reduce noice, how did you do it?

I can grab the small sample, but am unsure of the next step.

It's on a wedding video and I'm trying to reduce wind noice.

I have a bad feeling that the Sony NR is what you used and that doesn't come with SF7.

Hope I'm wrong.

Thanks in Advance.

Andy

It was NR2 that he was using. I got NR2 along with SF7 as part of a deal that New Magic were running during DV Expo. However they seem to be bundling more of the stuff that you used to have to buy separately.
Do a check, you should find it under 'DX favorites' in SF7.
But I seem to recall it did come on a separate CD, how did you buy SF7?

Anyway if you've got NR2 then documentation that comes with it will tell you how to use it. There's some pretty good demos of both it and the vinyl restoration tool.

If you've got it but still cannot figure it out let us know.

Bob.

... and while we're there, any date about the release of your book (V5) Spot?

Andy,
To my knowledge, Noise Reduction comes with Forge 7, and that's exactly what I used...You might want to check with your dealer.
It's also available separately online.

Just a suggestion, but would the Noise Reduction plugin really be the right tool for removing Wind?

It's not a constant background hum or noise, wind gets louder and softer and can sound pretty different with each gust.

Just curious for others' thoughts on this (is there a better way?)

A change of diet usually cures wind :)

But seriously, the biggest problem with wind noise isn't just the change in amplitude. That you could deal with by processing each part of the file separately. Time consumming but still doable.
However what NR does isn't magic. The noise sample builds a spectrum analysis of the noise and then uses that to setup a very large number of notch filters. Now in the case of wind it usually has very many frequencies and a large number of them are most likely going to be in the same spectrum as what you want to keep. So you would certainly get rid of the wind noise but you'll almost certianly destroy what you want as well.
You can to some extent abate the noise with some savage bottom end roll off. If you've got a music bed underneath then you may get away with it. But by far and away the best advice is don't get wind noise into your audio in the first place.
I know that sounds trite after the event but I don't think anything like enough emphasis is put on how important audio is to moving images. I think SPOT was saying it's around 80% of how the viewer perceives the images. I wouldn't have given it quite such a high score for fear of exaggeration but it seems real world tests support that figure.

Spot said it was 70% :)

Yes, I got the bit about ' you can't polish a turd' :) however it was my brother's wedding, and being in the bridal party I didn't shoot the vid, so I'm doing the best with what simeone else shot.

As it is my bro, I'm duty bound to do the best with his wind problem :)

So, I'll open the floor up for suggestions. I'm all ears! (Dietary suggestions aside!)
