stabilize appears to not work

dmyers wrote on 1/23/2012, 12:53 PM
I am probably an advanced amateur. I am trying to transition from Studio 14 to Sony Vegas 11 Pro.

I am up to date with build 525. I have been trying to use "STABILIZE". I follow the directions but after what appears to be the function working ( progress about 2 mins for a 12 sec clip). When its complete I see no difference in the time line video.

I have a ProDad stabilize plug in on my Studio and it works.....Any ideas...Duane

The internal Stabilizer in Vegas 11 is a big disappointment to many users (search on "Stabilize" in this forum). That said, sometimes you can get good stabilization by applying the following principle:

When stabilizing video in Sony Vegas 11 using the internal stabilizer or Mercalli V2, best results are obtained when matching properties of source footage, project properties and render properties. If render properties must be different, render to an intermediate or a new track.

Thanks Jerry, I am using its default settings. I'll try using another track for stabilize....Duane

amendegw wrote on 1/23/2012, 1:38 PM
Duane, All three must match, Project Properties == Source Footage == Render Properties. As implied, you can get away with a final render to different properties if you render to a new track using Project Properties.

btw, suggest using the following procedure to make sure your Project Properties match your souce footage:

Having the right match will also reduce the render time when you apply the effect.

Welcome to the club!

Some of us have been battling with the Stabilization Bug for months, and with no sign of any light at the end of the tunnel.

I've followed all the tips, help and instructions to the letter, BUT...the frustrating thing is that although the Stabilization procedure "works" fine, as soon as you save the veg file, and reopen it again, the clip that you have just "successfully" stabilized now play with 10 times as much jerkiness as before you stabilized it.

This is just so annoying, and yet SCS have neither acknowledged it as a bug, not suggested that there is any remedy in sight.
Marco. wrote on 1/23/2012, 4:20 PM
I had that problem until build 511 but in build 521 stabilization works fine for me if I only take care of having all settings match. I can save and reopen the project and it still works.
gripp wrote on 1/23/2012, 5:05 PM
I've just been trialling NewBlue Stabilizer and that works fine - stabilizations applied to clip get saved in the VEG file and display correctly when it's re-opened.

But i'm reluctant to pay out another large sum of money when after already "buying" enhanced stabilization in VP11.

How much longer should I hang on in the hope that Sony fixes VP11 - or do I take the plunge and buy the NewBlue version??????

Are you using build 521?
dmyers wrote on 1/24/2012, 4:52 AM
My mistake, I am using build 521....Duane
gripp wrote on 1/24/2012, 5:49 AM
I am using build 521 and Stabilization is a complete disaster.

And yes, I have all the project settings set to match the input footage!!
dmyers wrote on 1/24/2012, 3:21 PM
I re-checked and all properties match. Still doesn't work....Duane

What's better Newblue or Deshake stabilizer?

amendegw wrote on 1/26/2012, 4:48 AM
"What's better Newblue or Deshake stabilizer?"Mercalli V2 [grin]

Seriously, I've never used the NewBlue stabilizer and I'd love to see someone perform a Newblue stabilize on the source clip used in that YouTube demo: 00255.zip

Further comments: There are some definite advantages to DeShaker. Probably the biggest one is that it is free. Also, it appears to be as good at stabilizing panning/glidecam-like footage as Mercalli. DeShaker also does a superior job of filling the borders resulting from the stabilization zoom. One of the things I really like about Mercalli V2 is that it does a superb job of simulating a Rock Steady/tripod-like stabilization. I had an email dialog with a DeShaker user about comparing Mercalli & DeShaker and he posted the results here: http://www.ullerup.com/deshaker/mercalli.html

Now, Mercalli is not without it's idiosyncrasies (search this forum on "Mercalli"), but imho, it does a darn good job.

Just my 2 cents.

After what Jerry wrote I think I'm sold on deshake.

Can anyone give me guidelines on the workflow and where to get it (did you say it's free???). Can it work on the directly on the vegas timeline?

Thanks...I'm googling but any extra tips is a big help in this world-wide-web

Deshaken with Mercalli or Deshaken with Deshaker.? (from the test clip above)

Is this two separate products? They both (B&C option) looks pretty good!
amendegw wrote on 1/26/2012, 3:42 PM
Julius,

Look here: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=693582&Replies=9Deshaker question[/link]

The other thing I might add is that Mercalli V2 is arguably easier to use than DeShaker (but what the hey, it's free).

Maybe JohnMeyer will chime in here. He's the guy I'd go to for any DeShaker questions.

Ok thanks..I'll read up on it...I just installed VirtualDub along with Deshaker, but it doesn't recognize m2t files! Rats!
amendegw wrote on 1/26/2012, 4:04 PM
Julius, You'll need to run the DeShaker script from Sony Vegas in order to stabilize .m2t video.

Okay thanks again...they only script available is for:
New Deshaker for Sony Vegas 8.1.0.2

Is this safe for 64-bit Vegas 10?

Much appreciated.
amendegw wrote on 1/26/2012, 4:19 PM
The last time I used DeShaker was in Vegas 9 - as I recall I got it to work in 64bit. I think you just need to get it in the correct Script folder.

That said, maybe someone else will chime in that has used it recently.

New Deshaker works great in 10 or 11 64 bit for me. Was hoping to retire it in 11 but loaded the script last weekend. I also downloaded the Deshaker 3 version into the VirtualDub folder because the "New Deshaker" download I found had an older version.
