Stabilizing part of event

TOG62 wrote on 4/27/2018, 7:18 AM

I have a short part of an event that needs stabilization. If I split the event, select the target part and apply stabilization the effect gets applied to the remainder of the event, not just the selected part. Oddly, it does not get applied to the preceding part.

Is there any way to apply this effect to a part of an event, apart from creating a sub-clip using the trimmer (assuming that would work)?

There is no need to use the trimmer.
Look the way I do it, but there are more possibilities.

Thanks for that. I got it to work once but not on the exact section of video that I wanted to stabilize. Since then I cannot get the creation of sub-clips to work properly. The sub-clip appears to be created but I cannot get it to move to the timeline. When I try to open it in the trimmer (just to check it) it isn't selected and has to be chosen from the list of media. I periodically see an error message stating that an error occurred while opening a codec.

Do you have any idea why this is happening? The project works OK in other regards.

I tried the same thing on another PC, running VMS 14 on Windows 7 and it was fine. The original PC also has VMS 14 and 15 but both exhibit the problem on Win 10. So it seems to be something on, or missing from, that PC. Odd that it worked once though.

I don't know or understand what you are doing.
The way I did it, there is no need to move anything to the timeline, because it is already on the time line.

I shall describe in words what I did.

1. You have to split the timeline-event from which you want to stabilize only a part. Place a split at te beginning and at the end of that part.
The part that has to be stabilized is between the splits, select that part and right click on it.

2. Choose from the rightclick menu the option "Create subclip". Now a subclip is created, added to the window "Project Media" and on the timeline that part of the event has been changed into that subclip as a "Take" that can be switched with keybord "T".
3. Now you can add a MediaFX at the subclip in the Project Media window or on the timeline with rightclick choise Media FX.
4. Choose the stabilizer you want to use, in this case the Sony stabilizer and choose for "Analyse".

5. That subclip is now being stabilized.

I get what you are advising but on my Win 10 system it doesn't work. The stabilization does not work when applied to the subclip in the Project Media Window and, if applied to the clip on the timeline, affects the whole event. It seems that the subclip is not correctly created and therefore does not allow the effect to apply only to the selected section of the event. This all works fine on the Win 7 PC.

Here also Windows 10 Home build 16299 with last updates on laptop.
I also have the Windows 10 Pro version on desktop, both work as disired no problems at all with very good hardware rendering with the Magix AVC codec with QSV and/or NVENC options.

So to me it looks W 10 cannot be the problem.

'So to me it looks W 10 cannot be the problem.'

Agreed. Something on the PC is causing the problem but I have no idea what it is.

A hint

Look with the taskmanager what the problem could cause.

Thanks for all your help. I don't have Vpro and, to be honest, not sure what I'd be looking for anyway.

It turns out that the problem was that VMS was unable to create a fully valid subclip from the source video - a FHD M-JPEG file. An error dialog was generated and, oddly, once the dialog was dismissed the subclip became usable. It was necessary, though, to replace the original clip with the subclip in the Project Media window. None of these issues appear to affect other file formats.

I have reported this issue to Magix, who have replicated it and referred it to their QA team.
