Standard MPEG2 encoder settings

Hi,
Anyone know what the settings are for the standard mpeg2 encoder? To be honest the quality of the encoding is less than I expected. On the bright side the mpeg1 seems much better than I expected. Unfortunately, my main target is NTSC DVD and you can't change settings with the standard encoder. Any one have the professional encoder or VV? How configurable is it? I used TMPEGcoder (trial) and like the flexibility but I really didn't want to add yet another piece of software to the mix.

The advanced encoder that comes with Vegas allows you to tweak all the settings just like TMPGenc but I've found that I never have to. You can download the encoder manual from SoFo’s web site and see all the settings. I just use the standards NTSC DVD template and my DVD's come out looking as good as the original footage. What are you seeing that doesn't look good? the colors? compression artifacts?

I used TMPGenc all the time and I’m really impressed with the MainConcept MPEG encoder. I think it’s just as good but I know that this is a very subjective area and what looks good to me may be unacceptable to you. I don’t use TMPGenc any more.
