Static Zing!

I use an older HP Pavilion laptop to load media while editing on my primary system.

Just a few moments ago, I "slid" across the room in my rolling chair and touched the laptop. WOW! I obviously had built up enough static charge to cause quite a jolt up my arm and into the laptop.

The laptop immediately shut down. Now, when booting, it will only boot to the Windows Advanced Option Menu (Safe Mode, Start Windows Normally, etc.) The keyboard and mouse are inoperative and the computer does not respond to any "key".

Am I guilty of capital punishment or is there a procedure to reset a computer after such a shock?

I really like that old laptop...we've been through a lot together!

Sounds like a trip to the nearest computer repair facility is in order. A shock like you describe is capable of trashing the electronics (not to mention what it does to your arm!)

I pulled the hard drive and memory (I had signed a donor card for it) and tearfully closed the lid.

Services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Butch's New Laptop Fund, in care of this forum.

The wife said it had been through enough heck...go buy a new one!

Ain't she cool!

I use a product called Static Guard spray. Works very well to eliminate that static problem. 'cause you don't want to kill your new computer. J
