Still crashing. But taking a few steps back.

Okay, guys. I know everybody talks about Vegas crashing for one reason or another (I'm still using V8c). But for almost three years, I never had that problem -- until now...and it's driving me crazy.

What makes it worse is that my faster machine -- amd athlon 64x2 dual
6400+, 3.21ghz, 3.25gb/ram -- is the only problem. My slower machine -- amd athlon 64x2 dual, 4400+, 2.21ghz, 2.00gb/ram -- is still using ConnectHD without any crashes, ever.

So now, I'm just trying to ascertain what I HAVEN'T tried as a solution.

Over the last two days, I took my PC to the repair shop, ran diagnostics, had no hardware issues; they installed Win 7 RC as an option. I bought and downloaded the 7-1-2009 version of NeoScene. It's working with Win 7, but crashing is still far too common.

For what it's worth, I'm convinced that it's HDV and/or possibly M2T related, because other arduous renders (like uncompressed), seem to be fine.

I tried to use that CFF tool to allow expanded use of my RAM (I think xfx posted this advice). I was only able to alter vegas.exe, since I don't know how to get into the cabinet files that house the .dlls he recommended altering (anybody know?)

I keep thinking this has to be a simple problem since I've been free from these issues after several years. But I don't know what to think at this point. My much-needed 6400+ is almost useless for V8c-editing (do I need V9? seems like there are a lot of complaints about its initial release).

So, dear Vegas family, what is left?

It's the EXACT same procedure as opening a exe file. Open CFF then open the the dll files... change the handle... then save.

Teh files in question are located in Sony\Vegas8 Pro\fileIO plugins\M2TSplug

Hey, blink. On my machine those dll's are inside of an m2tsplug.cab, but when I double-click it to get to the dll's, CFF simply loads the .cab file, instead of behaving like a folder (which I presume is what I need it to do).

Thx. I'll see what happens from this point.

Then you're looking in the wrong folder. Files inside cabs are not active. I suspect you're looking in a folder called "Sony SETUP" and not the "Sony" folder

I'm outta moves. If anybody has any others, please let me know.

Are there other codecs that are good subs for Cineform HDV. i.e., that will play smoothly enough to reasonably edit in Vegas?

You could try the XDCAM 422 codec that comes with V9.

I suspect you're right, the problem lies with how Vegas and/or the MC codec handles errors in m2t files. Transcoding them to something else so that the error correction is done once with nothing else happening as well may get you out of trouble.

Bob.

My crashing woes were summarily resolved by replacing the video card with a GeForce 9800 GT.

Ahhhh, happy day...
