Still having problems with lots of clips

I'm still having problems putting together my 2 hour movie from all the clips. I am just sure it is VMS 8.0 running out of file handles. Just now I opened the project back up and it scanned down the timeline and when it got to M2U00375.MPG it said the media was missing and prompted to either ignore or select a replacement. So

I opened Explorer and went to the footage folder and opened the same file which played just fine in Nero. So I know the clip is good.

I browsed to the media folder and re-select the file and then I am rewarded with this error message:

[Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0]

! An Error occurred accessing project media .
The reason for the error could not be determined.
[OK] [No Details]

An error occurred opening the media file.
D:\footage\Drag Week 2007\M2U00375.MPG

Ok, I will not fight this and need a workaround. Is there any way in VMS to put together 12 or so clips at a time and combine them so I can reload the groups to make the entire movie?

Most of the clips have 5.1 audio and there are a handful that are just 5 second slow-motion with no audio. I do not want to lose the 5.1.

I've had clips that tank VMS even though they play OK with other software. Vegas seems to be very picky about any errors in clips.

Have you tried opening the clip by itself in a new project? If it still causes an error then there is something wrong with the clip.

First close Vegas and open it again.
Next try dragging the file from Windows Explorer strait to the timeline.

I double checked and there is nothing wrong with the clip. It opens just fine by itself.

No, it is definitely either a memory or file handle limit issue I am running into.

But back to my other question.. Is there a way to take 10-20 of these clips and combine them without losing the 5.1 tracks and save them as just one clip? If I could do this I believe I could get them all on the timeline.

MPEG2 is a difficulty. Vegas Studio has no way of combining these without re-rendering. Try googling for womble. It's a nifty little program that supposedly can join files together without re-rendering. I have no idea if it can preserve the 5.1 audio though.
