still image capture

i want to capture still images from video shot on a canon Vixia HF10. I transfered the video to the hard drive via USB as MTS files and I view the video on the timeline. When I save the selected image, it always saves as a 655x480 at 72dpi. The images all save the same regardless of how large i make the preview window. They also show quite a bit of jagged horizontal lines.

Are there settings or is there a way to make the images smoother or capture at a higher resolution.

I am working on a windows xp pro system, Athlon dual core 4200, 2GB or ram and over a TB of hard drive space.

My capture settings are Best/Full. I read in a previous posting that that user was getting 1920 capture on their stills. Why am I getting only 655?

1. What you're capturing is the full frame of whatever your source material is, in your case it seems to be SD. That "other" user was probably capturing HD. You can't put into the capture what wasn't there to start with.

2. If you have motion in your video, the captured frame, which is composed of two fields each temporally displaced by 17, or so, milliseconds, will show jaggies. The faster the motion, the more pronounced the effect. If there was no motion in your video, there will be no jaggies.

The VIXIA HF-10 is a 1920x1080 AVCHD camera. Set your Vegas *project* properties to match (1920x1080). Then be sure to select Best/Full on the preview window (even if you only see a portion of the image) before clicking on the snapshot icon. Even if you only see part of the image while on Best/Full, the saved snapshot will contain the entire image.

You'll probably want to use one of the "Auto" options for preview otherwise, so that you can see the full frame in whatever size your preview window is.
