There is a 3 piece veg that will place 3 images, video or still, side by side on the http://www.vasst.com/login.htm site. I think it's called 3-way virtual transition or something like that. Search by author, look for DSE.

FOUND IT..

Thanks a lot.. I think I can work the rest out.. thanks again.

I will also have to take a spin around that site some time.. when I get time for experiments.

Okay for anyone who might search for the real answer it is simply...

1) Setting up 3 video tracks (easy enough.. and ovious even to a noob)

2) Set TRACK MOTION (from TOOLS->VIDEO pull-down menu for the 1st and 3rd tracks) and adjust one's center to the left and another to the right.

3) Set pan/crop on your stills... or video, or whatever.

Nice... simple.

mark, you don't need to use the Tools menu to get to Track motion.
Just click on the "picture in picture" icon seen on every video track header. Looks like two small white squares, one lying on top of the other.

aha!.. can't beleive I didn't see that.. thoguht I ran the cursor over everything!

what threw me off was that it was easy to see in the example VEG that the 1st and 3rd tracks had that TRACK MOTION diamond shaped icon that could be expanded.

then the key frames were easy to recognize... but trying to get teh diamond TRACK MOTION icon to appear on the middle track (which, of course, was defaulted to center) was not obvious. A HELP search revealed teh TRACK MOTION menu option.. but not the little button.

thanks.

I also noticed that you cannot get the diamond-shape icon if you try to create a TRACK MOTION (motion track?) but do not actually move it from centered.
