Still Images not updating in Build 314

AlanH wrote on 5/20/2024, 9:31 AM

I create and edit videos in VP21 with overlaid static text / lyrics / images / title boards, etc.

Using the Affinity Publisher app, I create a 'document' consisting of HD video size screens, and export these as PNG image files into a particular folder.

The images are then dropped into a track on the timeline.

If I need to change some text, a font, colour etc. in one of these images, I do that in Publisher and re-export all PNG files.

Previously, the images in Vegas Pro would immediately automatically update to the latest images.

But this seems to have has stopped in Build 314, and my efficient workflow has come crashing to the ground.

Has the auto-update functionality been broken, or has some option I'm unaware of been reset?

Any suggestions would be useful - Thanks!

@AlanH I too have noticed this, add a picture to the timeline, decide to edit the orig in a photo editor opening it from the Windows folder - export from the photo editor overwriting the orig, Vegas used to update the pic on the timeline but no more, This was in (300), I haven't tried it in (314) & can't remember if it worked or didn't in the previous version. Refresh in the Project Media window makes no difference.

@AlanH, @Gid In Options/Preferences/General, enable the option 'Close media files when not the active application'. In Options/Preferences/Video, take the check mark out of the option 'Display at project size'.
That works for me.

@Jack S Thanks, I have 'Close media files when not the active application' unticked because the crashes that were occurring when moving/looking at other open apps, I now have a small dilemma but then again if I want to edit an image on the timeline I open it using HOS - OpenPhotoEditor which places the altered image on the timeline as a Take.

But thanks again I'll try that & I'll keep it in mind, at least I know how or why for futures sake 👍

hmm, fishy, maybe a bug, I do not have time to investigate now (I need to leave pronto) or try @Jack S, but with my current settings from prior versions (did not change anything) I have the issue that the pic on the timeline changes correctly, but the play and editor view never, and even worse, not even the rendered result. Opening a new second Vegas besides the current with the issue, does have the change in both the timeline and the editor view...

This needs further investigation.

@AlanH Changing the Preview Quality updated the image, but I can't really make sense of it because I did it a few times, Good (Half) only showed the first alteration, Good (Full) updated the image each time, & on the 4th go all Preview options started worked 🙃😂

I'll continue using HOS - OpenPhotoEditor which places the altered image on the timeline as a Take 👍

Hi Folks, thanks for all your suggestions.

Having 300 and 314 on 2 separate PCs has allowed me to compare the settings in more detail, and I have found that 300 had  'Close media files when not the active application' enabled, whereas 314 had not. When I enabled it on the 314 installation, it appears to be updating OK, so panic over!

Not sure if I had ever deliberately enabled or disabled that option, so maybe the default state is different between 300 and 314.

Just as a bit of feedback to one of the other comments: changing Preview Quality didn't help on my setup.

Onwards and upwards!

.

@AlanH

Not sure if I had ever deliberately enabled or disabled that option, so maybe the default state is different between 300 and 314.

You did not deliberately enabled or disabled this option, in build 314 the developers have changed the default setting of 'Close media files when not the active application' as can be found in their build 314 update info under known issues:

  • The preference to unload media when the VEGAS application loses focus has been turned off, which may cause some problems if you are editing the same media in multiple applications at the same time.

I had vaguely remembered this yesterday, but did not look it up as I was pressed for time.

This 'new default' worries me however, as I am guessing/fearing (not sure on this) that it is just a cheap workaround (and not a fix) to avoid other issues mentioned in the build 314 fixes/improvements:

  • Prevent crash which may occur when application is brought back into focus
  • Fixed a crash which may occur after undo/redoing shortly after bringing VEGAS back into focus
  • Improve speed when application comes back into focu

Can some of the developers @VEGASDerek shed some light on this? Do we loose the fixes if enabling it back?

This change was made specifically as a short term solution to deal with that last bullet point...the speed problem. The other two issues that you highlighted are unrelated and will not be affected by altering the preference.

A better solution to this problem is currently in progress and we hope to be able to integrate this in a future release.
